Gates close october, 31st A Georgetown woman swarmed by wasps was saved by three quick-thinking kids. Nicole Mceachran's ordeal occurred during a recent walk with her two dogs -- a Great Dane and a Dachshund -- around the Jubilee Woodlot. "As I was going around there were three kids, maybe 14 or 15, being typical teenag- ers," she said. "One was hitting all the downed, decomposing logs, and I didn't re- ally think anything of it." The teens may have accidentally dis- turbed a wasp nest. "I got hit with a wall of thousands of wasps," Mceachran said. In an attempt to escape the angry swarm, she ran toward the exit of the park. "By then I'd sustained 40 or 50 stings," she said, adding that her Great Dane had also been stung dozens of times. The dachshund, fled home and was later dis- covered to have also sustained several stings. "I was kind of going into shock," she said. "I'd been stung by a wasp before but with that many stings you don't know how far it'll go." Collapsed on the grass, Mceachran called for help and said at first she was ig- nored by passersby, but three children nearby responded. "They called out to me to ask if I was OK," Mceachran said, 'I told them to go home and tell their parents to call 9-1-1." While a parent and EMS was contacted, Natalia Wright, 10, and her sister, Mya, 8, along with a friend, stayed with her, bring- ing water for Mceachran and her dog. "My daughters called me immediately," Jennifer Fuller said, "they told me some- body was hurt and they thought she was having a seizure." Luckily, Mceachran and her two dogs have since recovered. "These kids did a great job," she said. NEWS 'WALL OF WASPS' Georgetown woman and her dogs swarmed by wasps Torstar file photo BRYAN MYERS bmyers@metroland.com YOUTH SAVE SEVERELY STUNG WOMAN
