In a time of nonstop pan- demic news, it's easy to get lost in the coronavirus case data being reported daily. Locally, some residents have noticed that the case counts published by Halton Public Health and the Prov- ince of Ontario are growing more different by the day. So, which numbers are right? Georgetown resident Janet Hanlin had the same question and reached out to our newsroom to find out more. We turned to public health staff and discovered Halton includes probable COVID-19 cases when it re- ports daily numbers, while the Province only includes confirmed infections in its counts. There's also the fact that Halton and the Province are pulling their numbers at dif- ferent times of day. "Our dashboard reflects cases reported to public health up until 11:59 p.m. on the previous night, whereas the Province extracts data for Halton and other public health units at 1 p.m. the day before," said a statement from Halton health officials. "When the Province re- ports changes in cases for a particular day, it is a net change capturing the differ- ence in the cumulative count for Halton at 1 p.m. com- pared to the previous day. It does not necessarily reflect new cases on one particular day." Staff noted the Region doesn't plan on aligning its reporting times with the Province, as Halton current- ly reports more recent data. Halton Public Health's COVID-19 dashboard is up- dated daily between noon and 2 p.m. For more informa- tion, visit www.halton.ca/ COVID19.
