21 | The IFP -H alton H ills | T hursday,January 28,2021 theifp.ca LLEWELLYN (NÉE Hills), Margaret Dorothea January 22nd, 2021 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Died peacefully in her sleep, Friday morning January 22nd, 2021 in her 99th year. Predeceased by her husband Donald (Llew), Margot will be sorely missed by her three sons, Mark (Mary Ann), Simon (Fran) and Clive (Ari), not to mention her nine grandchildren and many great- grandchildren. She was born in 1922 in Purfleet, England, the third of six daughters to Albert and Rose Hills. Her father was a blacksmith and tool-and-die maker, and from an early age she spent much time at his side helping in his workshop, which stood her in good stead later. An excellent student at school and an accomplished jock, Margot joined the WAAF in World War II and became a lorry driver. This was in the days of manual transmissions before synchromesh and, being wartime, there was no roadside break-down assistance. As a result, lorry drivers also had to be mechanics, for which she had an aptitude, as it turned out. As transport driver on various Royal Air Force fighter squadrons, a major responsibility of Margot's was to ferry the pilots around. Since she was young, vivacious and very pretty, the front passenger seat was much in demand as she drove the pilots! Our father, a Spitfire pilot who had joined her squadron towards the end of the war, found a way to ensure that HE was always the front passenger. In 1947, after the war, our Mum, with an infant son, found herself on her way to join her husband in Tanganyika (now Tanzania). The next seven years in East Africa were a huge change from her origins in a small English village, but she adapted well. In 1955, she again found herself on her way to join her husband overseas, this time with three young sons, and this time to Canada. The family moved into a bungalow in Georgetown, where she lived for the next 65 years and mowed her own lawn and tended her English garden until her late nineties. In Georgetown, she was an avid user of the Georgetown Library and loved the Georgetown Little Theatre. She was a fervent hockey mum, a keen Olympic-wrestling mum, an indefatigable supporter of her sons, a hard-working employee of Smith and Stone, a good neighbour, and a proud Canadian. She never did quite manage to lose her English accent, though. But most of all, she was a devoted wife and a terrific Mum and Granny. She leaves a big hole in our lives. Due to Covid-19, a family gathering will be held at the gravesite at a later date, when restrictions allow. In my heart your memory lingers, always tender, fond and true; there's not a day, dear friend, I do not think of you. Gone is the face we loved so dear, silent is the voice we loved to hear; too far away for sight or speech, but not too far for thought to reach, sweet to remember you who once was here, and who, though absent, is just as dear. We are sad within our memory, lonely are our hearts today; for the one we loved so dearly has forever been called away.
