A homeowner at 10 Brucewood Rd. is transforming an older bungalow into a spacious modern home. JUST THE FACTS • The engineer chose to construct the new structure using steel rather than wood to improve the building's strength and allow for more open-concept living space. • While steel beams are common con- struction materials in commercial and in- dustrial design projects, residential pro- jects often don't have the required space to store materials, thus Vincenzo Diano, property owner and engineer, said steel was cut off-site and delivered to the pro- ject. • The original bungalow will remain in place, but the builder will add a second floor as well as an addition to the original house. • The finished project will feature large glass windows and a floating staircase to the second storey. • Prior to this project, Diano, an engi- neer by trade, said he worked on rebuild- ing churches in Italy after earthquakes. • "Steel framed homes are limited only by your imagination," Diano said. "Steel framing allows for creative and flexible de- signs that are not possible with timber frames." • Diano, owner of Lemma Design and Contracting, said because he's doing the work privately, the timeline for completion is longer than a normal project. NEWS WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? OLDER HOME GETTING MODERN UPGRADE Steel beams are part of Vincenzo Diano's project at 10 Brucewood Dr., providing extra support for the open-concept single-family home.
