Variants of the novel co- ronavirus, which experts say are more contagious and may be more severe, continue to spread in Hal- ton. According to Halton Public Health's website, the total number of variant cases as of Feb. 26 was 55, with 17 in Halton Hills, 14 each in Milton and Oak- ville and 10 in Burlington. The total consists of eight confirmed cases with 47 more "screened posi- tive" as a variant of con- cern. The public health unit states on its website that "individuals who have screened positive are high- ly likely to become variant of concern cases, but it can take several weeks for con- firmatory test results to be received." As for the weekly CO- VID-19 cases, the website shows that from Feb. 19 to Feb. 25 there were 206 new cases in the region, com- pared to the 246 logged the previous week. The number of active cases stood at 177, includ- ing 28 in Halton Hills, 58 in Milton, 55 in Oakville and 36 in Burlington. As of Feb. 26, there have been 9,181 COVID-19 cases in Halton since the pan- demic started, with 8,748 marked as resolved and 195 deaths.
