th ei fp .c a Th e IF P -H al to n H ill s | T hu rs da y, M ar ch 4, 20 21 | 2 In 1984 the Georgetown Senior "A" Raiders Hockey Club held their 1st Old Timers tournament at the Georgetown Memorial and Gordon Alcott Arenas. There were 16 teams, involving players 35 years and over! There was a lot of hard work from the host Raider executives operating booster clubs in both the Lions Hall and Alcott Hall. The first year was a break-even project as they "learned the ropes" of running a successful tournament. While the Senior Raiders folded in 1985, the executive group stayed together and over the next few years raised over $30,000 to cover the Hockey Club's debts. The project was then turned over to the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council who would continue to operate this successful charity event. In the coming years, in excess of $150,000 have been donated to local Minor Hockey, the Georgetown Hospital, North Halton Twisters, arena expansion campaigns, and many other worthwhile charities. In addition to some very competitive hockey, we've had other exciting moments; the hydro was shut down at Alcott for 2 ½ hours on championship day and 4 games were cancelled. One time the Olympia hydraulics burst on the ice, again on championship day, and after a 2 ½ hour delay the tournament continued. To save time 2 teams agreed to a "coin toss" to determine the championship. For over 25 years Moe Schancks' Old Timers Referees have officiated the games and have kept things running smoothly and on time, even with the odd broken arm, hip, leg, ankle, nose, miscellaneous stitches and dislocations that occurred all in the name of good fun! The tournament is now operating out of the new Mold-Master 4 Rink SportsPlex with over 36 teams. A great facility, superior ice times, quality municipal support staff…a long way from 1984!! A large part of this project is to promote the living heritage of hockey in Halton Hills. The tournament now features 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+, 65+, and 70+ divisions in categories from "A" to "D" bringing players from across Ontario. Players and supporters get to reunite to talk about the "old days", their minor hockey, junior, college or pro hockey days. The 2020 tournament was cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but we are looking forward to renewing old rivalries and friendships with our 2021 tournament from Nov 5to 7 at Moldmasters Sportsplex. Don't miss it!! Promoting Hockey Heritage and community Service witH town SignS About 30 years ago the Hockey Heritage Council decided that there should be recognition of the important history of hockey in Georgetown with signs at the entranceways to the Town. It was difficult to get approval for new signs from town council or the MTO, but the Chamber of Commerce had signs at the Town entry points promoting service clubs in the community. With great help from Chamber of Commerce manager Doug Penrice, the Hockey Heritage Council was able to add a banner to the bottom of the Chamber's signs on the roads. 20 years later, the signs were getting rather shabby looking, so they were going to be replaced. This time, with the Town Council approval, new signs were constructed. It was noticed at this time that the new sign at Moldmasters Sportplex has a pretty big space at the bottom. Heritage Council members approached facility manager John Archibald about placing a banner there to promote Hockey Heritage activities in the Town. We were able to highlight that Moldmasters Sportsplex is the home of the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council, and that Georgetown was the home of the Little NHL. The Heritage Council is thankful for the help of the Town in promoting our message. 315 Guelph Street, Georgetown • 905-877-5289 374 Guelph St. E., Acton Proud sponsor of AtoMc house league hockey www.maplelodgefarms.com Bringing new ideas to the table.™ 905-873-2753 265 Guelph Street, Georgetown C C GHHC 36th OLD TIMER'S HOCKEY TOURNAMENT NOVEMBER 4, 5, 6, 7, 2021 The Club at North Halton 905-877-5236 Party Cinemas Anthony Andrews 519-853-0053 BMCCASA Real Estate Brokerage Barry Cordingley Broker of Record bcordingley@gmail.com 647-638-4663 Star Limousine Doug Starret 15235 Clayhill Rd. 905-877-9800 Halton Hills Minor Hockey Association Deker Electric Lana & Derek 905-702-0515 Mike Krause Sales Representative Coldwell Banker Fieldstone Realty Brokerage mike@mikekrause.ca 905-703-1290 Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce 8 James St. Georgetown www.haltonhillschamber.on.ca 905-877-7119 United Fire Safety Co.
