The Georgetown Choral Society (GCS) is offering a little musical gratitude for front-line workers' efforts over the past year. The society recently re- leased a video -- a cover by local members of Josh Gro- ban's "You Raise Me Up" -- as their way of saying thanks. "We wanted to show our appreciation for the people who have gotten us through thus far, whether they're medical workers, store workers, garbage col- lectors, police," said GCS Chair Isabel Watkinson. A request for submissi- ons was made to the com- munity for audio, video, and photos, for the project. "We were almost flooded with submissions," Wat- kinson said. The video was released to coincide with the anni- versary of the beginning of the pandemic. In 2021, the Georgetown Choral Society is celebrat- ing its 50th anniversary, having spent the previous year unable to host in-per- son rehearsals and perfor- mances. Instead, the group has met every Monday via Zoom, though technologi- cal limitations, such as sig- nal delay, made it impossi- ble for the group to sing to- gether. "Standing shoulder to shoulder, belting our moist air as we sing is probably the perfect way to spread the virus," Laurent Thi- bault of the choral society, wrote on the GCS website. "Needless to say, we have been completely shut down for the past year." A virtual performance is being planned for May, around the same time the GCS would, in pre-pan- demic times, have held their spring performance. The GCS is a non-profit, volunteer-run, organiza- tion with about 70 mem- bers. More information is available at www.George- townChoral.ca.
