Jennifer Holloway Sales Representative The region has tweaked its COVID-19 vaccine roll- out plan. All residents aged 50 and up -- as well as those aged 16 and over who can't work from home -- can now book a vaccine ap- pointment. The same goes for residents aged 40 and over. Meanwhile, those in the 40-plus and 16-plus age groups are eligible for the vaccine shots starting May 14 and 19, respectively. To book a vaccine ap- pointment, go to halton.ca/ COVIDvaccines or call 311. "Opening appointments for more residents will re- duce transmission, severe illness and death and get us closer to achieving com- munity protection," said Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hamidah Megh- ani. "I encourage everyone to get vaccinated when it's their turn. The best vac- cine for you is the first one you are offered, and the more people we are able to vaccinate each and every day, the closer we get to re- turning to normal," she added. As for the weekly CO- VID-19 cases, the region's website shows that from April 30 to May 6 there were 896, down from 969 the previous week. As of May 7, the number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 856 -- with 81 in Halton Hills, 280 cases in Milton, 255 in Burlington and 240 in Oakville. To date, there have been 15,973 cases of COVID-19 during the pandemic, with 14,901 marked as resolved. The COVID-19 death toll went up to 216. - with files from Melanie Hennessey.
