By participating in Blue Box, Green Cart, Yard Waste, Reuse and Household Hazardous Waste programs, as well as diversion programs at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS), Halton residents continue to maintain a high residential waste diversion rate. In 2020, 59 per cent of residential waste was diverted from the landfill. Also, through our shared commitment, we have helped to extend the lifespan of the landfill from 2012 to between 2044 and 2048—over 30 years longer than expected. This has saved taxpayers more than $15 million by deferring the costs of building a new site.
