Halton Advocacy For Climate tmer- fata Now (HACEN) very much hope: uu have taken to heart the very ae pressed in the most recent re} United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We hope the panel's findings will con- vince you lof the following: + We are not just confronted with cli- mate change but a climate emergency. + We must take urgent and courageous action to end the use of oil, gas and coal to energize our economy and rapidly trans- fer to an economy energized by sun, wind, water and geothermal. The long-term sustainability and secu- rity of life ‘and civilization on this planet is more important than the increase of im- mediate individual wealt * The financing necessary to pay for these essential changes must be the priori- ty item for all government buds ets. IERVYN RUSSELL HALTON ADVOCACY FOR CLIMATE NEREENEY Now WE DON'T NEED RURAL GARBAGE PICKUP This letter isin response to the article in the Aug. 12 Independent and Free Press re- arding a man calling for rural garbage collection. Asa30-year rural Halton Hills resident, Istrongly oppose rural garbage pickup. We do not need to contribute to gas emissions. or increase taxes to provide this unneces- sary service. Those wanting garbage pickup can hire acompany to do so. Given what can be re- cycled, taking a bag of garbage to the dump once ina while is part of rural life, just like having well water and septic tanks. It's better to have garbage at the dump than at the end of rural laneways for scav- engers to access.
