Photo by Dianne Cornish Golfers raise funds for cancer By DIANNE CORNISH The trophy for an inaugural Cancer Society fund-raising event arrived at the office of the Society’s Halton Hills Unit this week and was promptly presented Thursday to one of the golfers on the winning team of the Longest Day of Golf held about two weeks ago. The Unit’s special events chair- person Pat Harris gave the trophy, along with the organization’s heartfelt thanks, to Chris Nye. The winning foursome, com- posed of Nye, Don Ferguson, Gloria Sinclair and Peggy Darmody, raised $2,000 and played 108 holes of golf at the North Halton Golf and Country Club. Paul Armstrong, Jay Anderson, John Wheeler and Sandy Kerr formed the opposing foursome and raised $1,400 after playing 80 holes at the Georgetown Golf and Country Club. Both teams played from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friends and club members sponsored the golfers, with all funds being donated to the Cancer Society. The local Unit was also the recent recipient of a healthy dona- tion from Georgetown business- man, Bill Smith, who raised $22,500 at his 16th annual Invitational for Charity golf tour- nament at the North Halton Golf Club. The final tally for the Classics Against Cancer car show, he! June 21 in Cedarvale Park, has yet to be determined, Unit co-ordinator Sheila Huska said Thursday. However, with close to $26,000 collected from the two golfing events and the prospect of more money to come from the car show, Unit officials are pleased that Halton HillsThis Week, Saturday, July 11 1992, Page 13. Mayer's golf tournament By JAMIE HARRISON The Georgetown Golf and Fendley, will host the event July 13. Money raised from — the tournament is being donated to the Optimist Club’s Drug Abuse Program, which sponsors programs such as the CHICKEN Club, in 14 Halton-area schools. The CHICKEN Club teaches school children how to avoid drugs by using positive peer pressure. The kids are rewarded for their efforts by bowling nights and pizza parties. Since Peter Pomeroy was mayor of Halton Hills, the tournament has raised about $100,000 for Optimist’s charities. So far, 40 holes have been sponsored by area businesses, and more than 90 prize donations have been made, tournament organizers said. “We want people to have a good day of golf, a decent meal, and go home with a prize,” as well as raising money for charity, Fendley said in summing up the tournament. For participants are guaranteed 18 holes of golf and dinner at the club, as well as prizes for each player, ranging from trophies to a draw to a car. Only 160 spaces were made available for this event, and there are a mere 40 spaces remaining to be purchased, Fendley said. Those interested are encouraged to sign- up right up until tee-off time. ¢ Complete Collision Repair ¢ Restorations ¢ Fine Finishes ¢ Courtesy Cars 311 Armstrong Avenue Georgetown, Ontario 877-8685 fund-raising goals have once (_- to the support of Georgetown and area residents.” Huska also acknowledged “the leadership roles” munity events.
