Terry was forced to stop just out- side Thunder Bay on Sept. 1, 1980. The cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry died a national hero on June 28, 1981, capturing the hearts of millions in his quest to help fund cancer research and one day, to find a cure. It-was one month before his 23rd birthday. The Terry Fox run is now hailed as the largest single-day fundraiser for cancer research in the world. In 1991, International Runs were held in 33 countries. The total funds raised globally, as of this year, are over $100,000,000. Mayor Russ Miller will officially declare the Acton run open at 8 a.m. Participants can arrive anytime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. and do part or all of the 25 laps around the track. Several prizes are available for > Tanners, two Toronto Blue Jay tickets, four games of miniature golf at Tuitman’s and several Blue Jay souvenirs, including hats, water bottles, baseball cards and duffle bags. There will also be a food booth. Terry Fox T-shirts and buttons will be on sale, with all proceeds going directly to the cancer cause. Pledge forms are available in Georgetown at all banks (except the Toronto Dominion), Goodlets, the Civic Centre and the Cultural Centre and in Acton at all banks, the Credit Union, all variety stores and all schools.
