Page 30 — Halton Hills This Week, Saturday, October 24, 1992 Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: October 26th is fast approach- ing. Canadians will vote either Yes or No to the Concensus reached by the first Ministers and other leaders regarding the Constitution Reform. A good thing happened on the way to the Referendum. Canadians from all walks of life, from school children to retirees, we have all gained a new knowl- edge of what makes Canada tick. We are able to understand the make-up of the House of Commons, (the) Senate and Supreme Court as they exist today. We are more aware of our Canadian institutions and identity. We are examining our paternal- istic relationship with our Aboriginal peoples. The First Ministers have given all Canadians a crash course in his- tory, both past and present, and this is good. Now all Canadians must ask themselves if the proposed changes to the constitution should be implemented. We've heard the words negotia- tion and compromise used to describe the procedures leading to the concensus of the Charlottetown Accord. In our own day-to-day lifestyles, compromise and negoti- ation begin around the kitchen table with family members. They are essential ingredients for family harmony and growth. Throughout our lives, whether at work or play, I'm voting "Yes" we negotiate and compromise in order to reach agreement, but there are some of us that would deny this process to our First Ministers. Your vote will make a differ- ence. It's time for us to drop all the baggage we have been carrying around this past few weeks. We are not voting for or against Brian Mulroney. This is not a vote for or against Bob Rae. The ques- tion is not "should we be having this Teferendum with all its related expenses?" The question is "Do you agree that the Constitution of Canada should be renewed on the basis of the Agreement reached on August 28th, 19922" Seventeen. leaders of our diverse and expansive country came to an Agreement regarding Constitutional change on that date. They compromised with each other for the good of the whole. They kept the vision of their own provinces in their minds but put the good of all Canadians first and foremost in their hearts and they reached an agreement and now its time for us to answer the question. It's time for Canadians to reach out a hand of faith to each other, and with faith and commitment, continue to build this, the greatest country in the world. I'm saying" Yes" for Canada.
