Darts loop imposes format changes By Alex Tough Mixed darts night at cc Legion, under the auspices of the Industrial League, was held last Wednesday. The format was changed from pre- vious years. In times past there were a main and consolation sec- tion. Players were drawn blind, one first-division player linked with one from the second division. Two rounds in the main section were * played, with losers going into the consolation side. Other players sat around for a long time in between matches due to the length of time taken te reach from one of the draw to the other. The new format saw the same style of player selection but the draw was divided into four groups to play a round-robin format. The winners of each group then went into a knockout for the first four positions. The two emerging win- ners then played for the champi- onship, with the losers meeting to decide third and fourth spot. The group winners were Dave Scutt-Alex Bowie; Brad Youmans- Jim Carter; Ron Scarlett-Gary Hardcastle; and Stan Rhynold- Hugh Smid. Three teams were undefeated in the round robin, with Rhynold-Smid having only one defeat. Youmans-Carter came through to win the tournament, with Rhynold- Smid taking second spot. Scarlett- Hardcastle finished third with a win over Scutt-Bowie. Jim Carter and Bruce Stevens earned 180s during the play for the individual highlights. Mike Finn had a 108 open and Alex Bowie finished 77 with a final double of 19 to see my doubles finished for the night. No other highlights were recorded. The format was a refreshing change with players having at least four of five sets of continuous play. One or two losses still leaves play- ers with a thought of a chance to quality for the final stages. With more sets to play than under the former setup, one of the keys is to maintain play as quickly as possi- ble as sets close out. Monday night’s Halton ‘pub’ results for Oct. 19: George #2 9, O’Tooles 5; George #3 5, George #4 9; George #1 6 Time Out #2 8; Time Out #1 3 Copper Kettle #1 11; Copper Kettle #2 3, McGibbon 11; Legion #2 7, Legion #3 7; and Legion #3 11, Legion #13. Legion #4 is first in the division with 51 points, one ahead of McGibbon and five in front of George #2. O’Tooles, Legion #3, Copper Kettle #1 and Time Out #1 round out the top half of the standings. Arguably, the top match of the week was at O’Tooles, where the “TH, BRIGGS UPHOLSTERY + Spacing in Antiques | host met Georgetown #2, the third- and fourth-placed teams from the previous week. A fairly close con- test, on paper, was promised. The squads played singles first by agreement and the visitors took the first two. The hosts replied with four straight before the visitors responded to win the final two to the series. Surprisingly, O’Tooles only managed one more. win, in doubles, and a well played match went to George #2. Highlights from all the matches begin with Keith Radcliffe’s 180. High finish goes to Keith Ewing with 128 and Kim Smid and Bill Blackbourn closed 104 and 100 respectively. Brian fired a high score of 160 and John Colter had 145. Loads of 140s were recorded by _ Kouyoumjian, Gord Kennedy, Scott Dempster, Keith Radcliffe, Jim Long, Andrew Wooley, Bill Blackbourn and Bruce Stevens. Others are usually mentioned in this column and will be again. The ladies also figured in 140s, including Sandy Mercer, Katrina Buchanan. Monica Southon shot 137, Joyce Farmer had a 136 and Caroline Vallance had a 132. Julie Craig, Dianne Trebell, Neil Olmstead, Yvonne Graham, Keith Ewing, Darlene Wheeler, Ray Porter, Alex Paterson, Jim Long, Vic Lovell and Dave Nicholls were worthy singles winners. McGibbon won all of its singles matchups for a commanding lead in its match at Copper Kettle. Tonight at the Legion, Industrial Division leaders Gasketmen Cutters and Dream Team will try to retain top spot at the league resumes its normal play. Hustlers and Steeprock, in the first, Ensigns and Taxmen will try to catch them. On Monday night, Legion #4 should win at George #4 to retain top spot. McGibbon is at Time Out #1, with form pointing to a home win. George #2 hosts George #3 with George #4 entertaining Legion #4. O’Tooles visits Legion #3 look- ing to return to the win column.
