You’re at home meandering on a frosty day, and suddenly you think of a book you’ve been longing to read. Does your local library have it, you won- der. Is it in? It is worth a trip out into the cold? You slide over to your trusty per- sonal computer, push a key or two, and presto! The book is available, after all. The screen reliably tells you so. You quickly punch in a hold on it. This is not computer science fic- tion, it was made available by the Halton Hills Public Libraries last week. The launch of the Dial-Up Access came in conjunction with Ontario Public Libraries Week, from Oct. 19-25. The system enables anyone with a computer and a modem to access the Halton Hills Library catalogue 24-hours-a-day. A library without walls. Georgetown Deputy Chief Librarian Walter Lewis said the decision to purchase a dial-up sys- tem was made in 1989 with the installation of new computers. The library’s computer system has been updated in stages. “It’s always been a part of our plan to do this,” Lewis said. The Halton Hills Libraries’ first computer system, installed in 1978, was phased out by January 1990. The Dynix Library Automation System, Dial-Up Access, is “one of the very few things council approved for 1992 in terms of capi- tal for the library,” Lewis said. In light of the Halton Hills libraries’ recently reduced hours, “it’s one way to extend those hours, in a fashion,” said Lewis. There is an exciting long range plan to connect all public libraries in Halton Region (Milton, Oakville, Burlington, Halton Hills) by one Dial-Up Access phone number. The Halton Hills access is a stepping stone to a greater future network. Currently, each of the Halton municipal libraries have an individ- ual Dial-Up phone number. “The planning for a new genera- tion of interconnection involves not just the three original (Halton Information Network) libraries but also Burlington Library, Sheridan College, the Halton Board of Education and the Roman Catholic School Board,” Lewis said.
