Thursday morning the team found out it had won its protest against the Caledon Canadiens Raiders were dealt a severe blow when the club learned it won’t have left-winger Bryan Gendron in the lineup after he was claimed on waivers by an unspecified OHL team. Gendron had signed with the Raiders earlier this week after leav- ing the OHL’s Owen Sound over the use of an illegal player. On Monday, the Raiders travelled to Brampton, where they dominated the hometown Maroons for the first two periods. Kyle Hotham gave the Raiders the lead late in the first with a power-play goal, assisted by Ryan Busby and Ronny Larocque. e period also featured some tough defence by Alex Durham, Martin Lefebvre and Tim Mansfield. Late in the second, Brad Snow gave Georgetown some breathing room when he took Mark Fantegrossi’s pass from behind the net and scored to make it 2-0. Kevin Binsell also drew an assist. The third, though fast paced, saw the Maroon dominate with strong forechecking which resulted in two goals less than two minutes apart. The Raiders rallied hard, especially in the final minute of play, but where robbed of a go-ahead goal by excellent Brampton netminding. The result was a 2-2 tie, Georgetown’s first of the season. The following night at Memorial Arena, the Raiders met up with Orangeville for the second time this season. The result Tuesday was much the same of the first meeting, with the Raiders defeating the Lions 4-1. For the third straight game, Hotham spurred on his team by netting the Raiders’ first goal. Midway through the first, Hotham tipped Brandon Valente’s rebound shot, with Larocque also claiming an assist. The second was scoreless, but early in the third Valente connected for the Raiders game winner after a scramble in front of the Orangeville net. Hotham and Ryan Field had assists. A minute later, Graham McCulloch scored an unassisted short-handed goal for Georgetown, cashing in with a nice, high wrist The Lions then rallied with their lone goal of the game, spoiling Ryan LaRose’s shutout bid. LaRose did a great job of cutting down the angles and did come up big in stopping a breakaway shot, but he had no chance on the goal. With 4:35 remaining and on a play similar to the previous night, line- mates Snow and Fantegrossi combined, with Snow flipping in a Fantegrossi pass from behind the net. Defenceman Field also drew an assis! On Sunday, the Raiders rd their eighth straight win, downing Ancaster 9-3 at Memorial Less than two minutes into = game Hotham opened the scoring, taking a pass from Valente and slipping the puck into the left corner. Hotham assisted on the next scoring play 26 seconds later as he passed in front of the net to Larocque, who dumped it into the open left corner. Near the end of the period, Valente took Hotham’s pass from behind the net and flipped it in to make it 3-0. Early in the second, Corey Forbes shot in the eventual winner, with McCulloch assisting. Ancaster finally made it on the scoreboard, however Georgetown responded with four more goals in the second. Snow deflected in Fantegrossi’s shot, McCulloch scored from Mansfield, Hotham netted his second of the game from Busby and Fantegrossi scored to make it 8-1 for Georgetown. In the third, McCulloch scored his second of the game, assisted by Durham and Forbes. Ancaster rounded out the scoring with two goals, making the final score 9-3. Platers. However before Gendron could officially join the Georgetown team, he had to clear waivers in the OHL. “It’s really disappointing,” Raider GM Finn Poulstrup said. “But all we can do is continue looking for players. What else can you do.” Owen Sound officials will take Gendron off waivers and continue to hold his rights. Gendron will be allowed to practise with the Raiders, but can’t play in league ames. ulstrup was confident the addition of Gendron would be a big step towards turning the Raiders fortunes around. After three straight wins, Georgetown has lost its last nine straight Central League contests. Gendron came to Georgetown five seasons ago as a lanky forward out of Brampton. His solid play resulted in his being drafted in the sixth round of the OHL draft by the Peterborough Petes. Gendron spent three seasons in Peterborough and was the Petes ttt #2 80anees, osuuesese Sty a captain last year. However, he began this season with the Owen Sound Platers the result of a trade and had five goals and five assists through eight games before opting to leave because he wasn’t happy in Owen Sound. Even though he was courted by Central League rivals Milton Merchants and the Brampton Capitals, Gendron opted to return to Georgetown in the hopes of set- tling down and getting on with developing a career. However, the Raiders did get back at Caledon somewhat Thursday, with the OHA award- ing Georgetown a win for a 7-3 loss to the Canadiens after Spagnol played without first getting a release from the Mississauga Derbys, the team he joined late last season. Atoms kick off season Alex Trimbett had five goals to lead Dave’s Service Centre past MVP Sports 7-6 in the season opener for Georgetown Minor Hockey Association atom house league teams weekend. Greg Bidwell and Dave Cormier had the other goals. Jason Mirier had two assists, with singles going to Cormier, Kevin Morris and Paul Postiqlone. Errol Smith had three goals and two assists for MVP. Jesse Viens had two goals and Trevor Cash net- ted the otner. Cash added two assists, with Kevin Becker netting one. Chris Martynuik had three goals an assist as Varian defeated A and S Engraving 6-1. Tris Temple had two goals, with Jason Armstrong scoring the other. Tim McNichols. and Danielle King both added assists. Sean Currie scored for A and S. Mike Corbett had three goals as Hawks beat Future Stars 8-1. Josh Robbin and Thomas Dale both added two goals each, with Ian Cunningham scoring the other. Robbin added two assists, with sin- gles doing to Corbett. Dale and Cunningham. Adam Key scored for Future Stars. Only one penalty was handed out in the opening games of the season.
