Rockell There have been articles recently predicting that 1992 RRSP contri- butions will be lower than in 1991, and 1991 was lower than 1990. This is a pity, because RRSPs are be used to each taxpayer’s advan- tage and, second, to reflect on why the Federal Government has made these changes. First, the RRSP contribution for 1992 is based on 18% of your 1991 earned income to a maximum of $12,500. From this amount you must deduct, if you have a pension plan, the 1991 PA pension adjust- ment in Box 52 of your 1991 T4. Earned income is the total of salaries, i net business one of the last tax i investments available to the aver- age Canadian. Where else can you get a tax deduction when you make the investment and then have the investment grow tax-free till you retire? The main reason for the decrease is that we are in a recession, and many jobs have been lost, and for those still employed, overtime has been cut. Many people not affected by the economic downturn so far have been conserving cash due to all of the bad news overload. But, economic downturns have a way of ending and this one will surely end, and none too soon for many. This year is the second year of a major change in the rules for RRSP contributions. It is important, first, to understand them so that they can income, net rental income, certain royalties, alimony payments received, $.U.P. income, and research grants..less business loss- es, rental losses, and alimony pay- ments made. If all this is too much for you, don’t despair, Revenue Canada fig- ures all this out and prints it in a box at the top of your 1991 Assessment. People earning more. than $40,000 will be able to contribute more to build a bigger nest egg. People earning less, who may actu- ally see.their-contribution limit go down, should do everything possi- ble to contribute up to their limit. It may be a long time into the future before they realize the wisdom of making that decision. Second, our government is trying to tell us that they are not going to original picture returned unt be able to fund a satisfactory retire- ment income in the future, so they are encouraging Canadians to increase their retirement savings. The fact that they are allowing con- tributions to increase gradually means that the government knows See us make your mug at The Old Bank, 78 Main St. S., Downtown Georgetown, 877-6792 or place your order at: Georgetown Photo, HOURS: Acton Photo, Halton Camera Exchange, Up, Up & Away or Craig's Photo. @ THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF HALTON HILLS THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF HALTON HILLS APPOINTMENTS TO LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE ‘The Council for The Corporation of the Town of Halton Hills will be considering appointments to the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee.
