BRUCE ELMSLIE Broker / Owner Garth Turner MP Halton-Peel Christmas 1992. Once again, the shortest days of the year are behind us. The light is coming back. ‘There’s hope that next year will be better than the one that’s ending. It certainly is a time to be thank- ful we live in Canada. Yes, it’s true you have to pay more for a bottle of scotch than in the U.S., but a heart transplant is free. Our keepers are in demand around the world; we’re one of the biggest exporting countries; we won the World Series; we produce hockey stars, astronauts, rock idols Here's hoping yours is filled with joy. My very best wishes to all! Res. 877-7578 Bus. 877-5165 and Nobel Prize-winning chemists. ‘That’s not bad. In fact, a million people a year try to get into Performance| Counts Brenda Payton Sales Representative Parliament Hill report Canada, which should tell us some- thing about how others see us. Three-quarters of them have to be tumed back. Yes, I know we have problems and that it is not a perfect country. But there are no perfect countries. And this Christmas is a good time for one person - me - who’s been honored to serve Canada for the last four years, to express some anks. First, to my wife of 21 years, Dorothy, who gave up her own work, career and identity to help me try to be a good MP. That involves everything from setting up chairs for Town Hall meetings to researching in the Library of Parliament. She puts up with me working weekends, going out night after night and all that travelling. I could not have asked for a bet- ter partner or friend, in this political episode or any other part of my life. My thanks as well to all those people who have tried with me to make the system work a little bet- ter. You come out to meetings. You fill in surveys and give me good ideas to tell them about in Ottawa. You write me letters. You call in on the Cable TV shows. You let me do my job - representing Halton-Peel to Parliament. Thanks, too, for always giving me respect. That kind word in the grocery store means a lot more than you can imagine, after the way the national media says people think about politicians these days. I'd like to thank people who have volunteered, and made our commu- nity better for it. Whether it was in the October referendum, or with the firefighters or ambulance, or in church groups and service clubs, or supporting any candidates in com- ing elections - you make Canada a good place to live in. I’ve certainly learned over the years that governments alone can’t solve the problems. They can’t pass laws to make life fair or our neigh- bors caring. Only as involved citi- zens can we make that happen. So, I’m thankful to live in this community. This is a good place to have Christmas. It’s an example of what we have achieved in this country. Not per- fect, but about as close as any place that’s next year’s challenge. I hope this holiday season is a celebrate.
