The semi finalists were both also from England, Bobby George and Steve Beaton. Alan Asnstey of Canada reached the third round, losing to W. Weening of Australia at that stage. I can well recall the John Lowe perfect game. I was on a visit to Scotland to my family and Bryan Turner was also there. We had just finished watching a soccer match, with Malcolm T playing, and repaired to the local drinking establishment, well outside the legal opening hours, for a refresh- ment. The place was packed out and a “secret” police knock let us all in, It was there we witnessed the dart match where Lowe performed the miracle match. Copper Kettle #1 lost narrowly to George #2 and were happy with the Tesult over their more fancied oppo- sition. George #4 lost 4-10 to Time Out #1, George #3 lost 6-8 to Timeout #2, George #1 lost 6-7 to Legion #3 (both teams missing a player), Legion #2 defeated #1 by 8-6 and O’Tooles 6-McGibbon round off the results. O’Tooles, chasing for the top three places, faced a hard task against visiting McGibbon. The opening teams games were split and the home team took the open- ing singles with Paul Kirby and Dave Scutt over Stan Rhynold and Eddie Ebbinge. It was looking bet- ter. A string of five wins in succes- sion followed by even splits of the doubles saw McGibbon edge their way to victory. Dave Nicholls shot 180, high fin- ishes from Hank Van Gogh (116), Glen Hillier (108), Paul Goudie (105) and Terry Hancock (100) highlighted the individuals. Pete Pickering amassed ten bonus points with 4 x 140’s and 2 x 135’s. Scott Dempster fired 160 and Roger Armstrong scored 156 highs. Double 140’s came from Paul Kirby, Dave Scutt, Chris Scutt, Mark See, Paul Goudie with Stan Rhynold firing three of them. Gord Bottoms had a doubles win against father, Harry, Roger Armstrong/Yvonne Graham defeat- ed Ian McDonald/Dave McNeilly in doubles. Bruce Buchanan defeat- Bruce Stevens in singles battle of Bruce’s. At the recent monthly meeting of the Halton League, Dianne Tribell of Timeout #2 won the January half of the 50/50 draw and the February half cleaning up with over $100, and very nice, too. Rob Marrows, also of Timeout #2 won the other portion of the draw. George #4’s Ray Porter would have won, but he was not in the draws for those months. The second round of Darts Ontario took place recently at Acton Legion with not an Acton Player in sight. Rick Harden won the men’s singles section over Neil Olmstead. Self had a 2-7 afternoon which was otherwise pleasant, con- sidering the awful weather that day. Darlene Wheeler and Kim Smid played off in the final of the ladies singles. Wednesday night’s Industrial League had a big shock in store for first division players. Gasketman Cutters lost both double headers to the tune of zero wins and fourteen losses. The whole story is that the team could only field two players, captain Bruce Hope and Brian Ward. League leaders, Hustlers, Steeprock and Westenders took full advantage by winning handsomely over their opponents. Hustlers gained ten points, Steeprock thir- teen points and Westenders eight points. Steeprock move into second place and Cutters drop to fourth. A dramatic change of fortunes all round. In the second division, Dream Team carry on their way to the title, almost unchallenged, taking nine of ten on the night. Second place now belongs to Hotshots and Ensigns are now third. Ensigns only took two of ten whilst the Hotshots scored six. Dan Abercrombie had a high start of 140 and Al Murphy topped hundred in two of his starts. Herman finished the awkward 99 and Graham Griffiths closed off 88. High score of the night was 140 and scored by Ray See, Ron Scarlett, Beau Beaumont, Al Murphy, Brian Hicks, Ray Ackroyd, Shawn Warwick, Mike Hope, Hank Van Gogh and Hugh Smid. Beau Beaumont actually net- ted four 140’s, three in the second match when he “came alive” (the beer helped). Ron Vallance, howey- er, topped all with a 180 maximum. Legion members Fred Gilmer trophy is again up for grabs and is due to be played on 23 January with pre registration between 12 and 1 p.m: or at the bar earlier. Fee is $2 per player as usual. The next Darts Ontario is 7 February at the Georgetown Legion. The usual format of mixed doubles, ladies and men’s singles is on show: Registration for the dou- bles is set for 10 a.m. and singles for a 1 p.m. close. The Halton League is hosting a tourney on 24. January at the Legion for singlés in support of the annual dinner at $2 per player. This should be a fun day ae with lots of darts for everyone. ¥ In the meantime, darts abound-on ~ Mondays at the locals and the Legion on Wednesdays, not forget- — ting the youth on Saturday after- noons at the George, already recommenced after a short break. Acton Soccer Club is now accepting written applications for those interested in being Coaches are needed for the boys, U-11, U-13, U-15 & U-19 age divisions.
