Halton Work Programme looking for contracts By Wendy Long Business is slow at the Halton Work Programme in Acton. For its 22 employees, that means a disruption in learned employment skills and life management. Burlington and Oakville, “assists in the rehabilitation of individuals suffering from a mental illness,” said Anita Lloyd, manager of the Acton program. But Lloyd is quick to point out + that the program is a valid work- place that turns out a quality prod- uct and is interested in doing con- tract work for local companies. “We do subcontract work including light assembly, labeling, packaging, tagging, collating and display assembling. We have excellent quality control and rea- sonable rates. We’re very effi- cient.” Lloyd is saddened by the stigma that mental illness casts on people. “These people are wonderful,” Lloyd said emphatically. “They’re not dangerous. We assess their vocational potential, teach generic work habits and skills, provide employment for those requiring a sheltered setting and encourage further training and employment for those with greater capabilities.” Employees are paid on a piece rate basis to encourage motivation and work skills. The headquarters of the Halton Work Programme opened in 1983 in Oakville, funded by the Ministry of Health as a registered charitable organization. The found- ing sponsor was the Canadian Mental Health Association. Employees are still referred to the ‘program through a mental health professional, although many go on to work in the regular labor mar- “December and January were teally dead,” Lloyd said. “We had to lay people off.” Z Lloyd is hoping business will pick up and that companies will investigate the unique program. The organization is non-profit; “Ninety per cent of our profits go back into our employees,” Lloyd said. The Acton location has just acquired a van to pick up and drop off small loads. Employee Fred Fortner, 62, said exist. “They’re very good here and LOTTERY courtesy of Convenience 10 Mountainview S. 877-9741 Guelph & Delrex 873-3056 Georgetown Early Bird 06 11 13 45) RESULTS UNOFFICIAL Call 870-9134 (Lotto 6/49) or 870-9135 T Halton Hills This Week, Saturday, January 23, 1993 — Page 3 ¢7<| WHEN IT COMES TO PRIC BOB ¢ STICKS TO wt \I Wea CAO. 7 Anita Lloyd, says the workers at her program turn out a quality prod- uct and is interested in doing contract work for local companies. they treat you good,” Fortner said. Selected and cared for properly, your gown can be used by several generations. Wedding gowns are with beads, lace, and other trim. This may cause problems during cleaning. Many trims are glued rather than sewn to the surface of the fabric. Sometimes the trim will start to curl and pull away at the complete loss and removal of trim. After The Wedding The gown should be cleaned within a few days or weeks after the ~ Twenty-seventh of a Series ~ WHEN WEDDING BELLS RING wedding. Unattended spilled champagne or punch can leave invisible stains that darken in time. The longer the stains or soils are left in the gown, the greater the probability of their becoming rmanently set.
