The committee will monitor identified students to make sure their educational needs are bein; met under the new destreaming system, Identified students include the children from learning disabled to gifted. “T believe if a teacher can meet the needs of the exceptional stu- dents, they can meet the needs of all students, in my opinion,” trustee Linda Glover told the board at a meeting last week. Trustees said that they have received several calls from parents concerned that destreaming could result in their children getting a poorer quality of education. “Parents want some assurance that we’re not going to just ignore their kids,” trustee Debbie Marklew said. Trustee Don Cassidy said he was concerned that other students were being left out of the motion adding that he-was worried about the impact of destreaming on all students. He asked Glover if she had presented the motion as a result of a presentation by a grou, of parents called SEAC which rep- resents the interests of exceptional children. She admitted the presen- tation influenced her to put the motion forward quicker than she lanned. The committee will be com- prised of a superintendent, special education coordinator, special ser- vices coordinator, special educa- tion head, elementary and sec- ondary principal, trustees and SEAC representatives. The committee will present a preliminary report to the board in May. It will outline how the needs of identified students will be met in Grade 9 during the 93/94 school year. Destreaming is a program implemented by the Ministry of Education that calls for all Grade 9 students at all levels of learning ability to be put in the same class- es at a high school as opposed to. the current system of students choosing advanced or general level classes.
