Computer By Dianne Cornish The Georgetown office of the Canada Employment Centre (CEC) identified the need for more com- puter literacy and the Toronto School of Business responded with just the right formula. The School, headquartered in Brampton, came, up with an extensive computer training program geared towards helping people learn, the skills they need to enter the local workforce. Last Wednesday, the School held an open house at its Georgetown location in the Professional Arts Building on Sinclair Avenue. The purpose of the event was to make companies in town aware of the training course and promote the job placement program which is an integral part of the course. Heather Matthews, the School’s project co-ordinator of government contracts, told open house guests the four-week placement with the host company is advantageous to student and company alike. The adult student gets an opportunity to use their newly-acquired computer skills in an office setting and the host company provides a communi- ty service by providing an environ- ment where the student can effec- tively use those skills. Since 1990, the Brampton cam- pus has been awarded five major programs to train unemployed adults with a view towards getting them back into the workforce. The courses are funded by Employment and Immigration Canada and are geared to meet job-skill training needs as identified by local CEC offices. School director Alan Packard said the five government contract programs were offered in Brampton, Georgetown and Orangeville. Four courses, each 14 weeks*long, were offered last year in Georgetown. This year, another contract has been signed for anoth- er four courses in computer skills training in Georgetown. “The majority of our student body is made up of women and includes a significant number of Happy Belated 40th to SMILING DEB of Acton March 11, 1993 We knew you wouldn't be smiling if we used a real photo of you skills are sole support parents, visible minori- ties, new immigrants, mature stu- dents, and men and women who need retraining as a result of being laid off because of the recession,” Packard said.
