The Halton Board of Education must cut an additional $2.4 million Out of its 1993 expenditure budget because of a reduction of provincial grant funding. Education director Bob Williams Suggests that of this amount, $1.4 million will be saved by reducing the budget for staff recruitment, for the temporary assistance fund, for administrative assistance and for the elementary panel. In addition, the non-contractual staff develop- ment budget will be eliminated, as will the trustee convention/confer- ence budget, the “Our Schools” magazine, the driver education pro- gram and summer school trans- Portation. Trustees will discuss the cost-effectiveness of these pro- posed changes at a finance commit- tee meeting this Monday at the J.W.Singleton Centre in L7G 4S3 ° COMMERCIAL + Surplus Stock, Off-Season Inventory ceoreromn or 416-873-4666 | ¢ INDUSTRIAL ~ Extra Inventory - Dead Files, etc., etc., etc. MONEY RXGSNGzers PLANNING CENTRES TAX TIME!!!!!! A further $1 million will have to be made up either by laying off 75 non-contract employees, such as instructional aides and secretaries, or if the board’s 4,000 staff mem- bers volunteer one day’s pay, which will be deducted from their paychecks. These contributions will be considered voluntary and confi- dential. Sally Rewbotham, president of the Halton chapter of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF), announced that the council has rejected the idea of the voluntary contribution: She believes that the financial bur- den of education should rest with the taxpayer, and not with the teachers. She also believes that if the teachers give in, their bargain- ing power will be weakened in upcoming negotiations. What's black and white, and read all over? 26 Guelph Street Georgetown, Ont.
