The wonders of winter? sports By Colin Gibson Did you notice that spring has almost sprung? Did you notice the Robins are back from Kapuskasing? (They wear winter coats up there because they can’t afford to go to Florida for the winter). Well, hold on to your mukluks. According to those in the know, we could be in for at least one more good blow. Which through various thought processes - and various other forms of dementia - leads me to a totally irrelevant sports story. as we who have survived this stern winter shake the snow off our pin- feathers and look for warmer weather ahead. One of the best sports experi- ences I ever went through was the year my Cochrane High School football team went 0-6 and we only managed to score one touchdown the whole season. Cochrane is about 600 miles north of here - as the polar bears fly. I played football throughout my high school years, but the afore- mentioned season, when I was a Grade 9 walk-on, will never be dis- yee, the senior team in Grade 9, ti believe me, that was no big deal. In the first place, we didn’t have a junior team. And with a student population of only 450, it was expected that all able-bodied males - with very few exceptions (a note from mother didn’t count)- try out for the team. Intelligence, or lack of. same, was not factored into the selection process. My Grade 9 year, the team name was changed from the Spartans to the Cobras. Nobody questioned the name change, but there hadn’t been a cobra siting that far north in recent memory. But then again, rea- soning went, not too many Spartans had been spotted in the area lately either. The weather was ugly that year - ROOM FOR MOM AND DAD ‘Your cholce: Bring along the folks, use the upstairs apartment for added The but so was our team. While we didn’t have talent, we had characters and that memorable season could have been made into a movie - maybe it has been. The school was situated on the shore of Lake Commando, which meant practices on school grounds were usually pretty sedate affair unless someone felt like taking a swim -which did happen, occasion- ly. Our football field was located roughly a mile from the school on fairgrounds property, sloped dan- gerously to one side and required some nifty running at times to avoid reminders which had been left behind by area animals, We would change at the school, then trudge off for practice at the fairgrounds whenever Coach decid- ed that five-yard wind sprints weren’t really helping our condi- tioning. My house was on our route so. every now and-then a couple of us would drop by to say hello to my mom and scoff some sandwiches. Our equipment was out of the Knute Rockne era and nothing ever seemed to fit properly. The first week of practice, about the third week of September, it started to snow and we suffered our first casualties. I returned punts and kickoffs, was on the kick coverage team, saw some action at offensive back and some at defensive back. We lost our first game 66-0 to perennial champion Schumacher Bears and the legend began. Just before our second game, the school was closed because of a lice epidemic, but the game was played anyway. Amid taunts about lice and what white substance had been used to line the field, we battled to a 46-0 defe Things were improving - or so we thought. The day of our third game it was so cold that Coach had tents erected on the sidelines and hand warmers were issued. The only problem was most of the guys didn’t want to leave the relative comfort of the tents for the frozen field, so most of the time we ended up playing short- handed. We also incurred a few injuries when guys suffered burned hands using the hand warmers without the protective cover. I think * final score was 52-0 -not in our favor, The day of the fourth game saw sleet mixed with ice pellets hurtling down, but Coach insisted we were men and could take it. He drove his car next to the team bench and didn’t emerge for the whole game. Every now and then he’d roll down the wan and yell out instructions. Coach also used to teach health classes. They were ee as disas- trous as the football te: He would get cenbarraiied trying to discuss the various parts of the male and’ female body, so for the: most part, our classes were pretty rt.
