I bet there are many of the read- ers of this article who know little or. nothing about the origin of swim- ming in general, especially compet- itive swimming. The following is an excerpt from a speech written by the writer’s daughter, who is eleven years old. “Evidence shows that swimming started as early as 2500 B.C. in Egypt. This, perhaps, included “Cleopatra”. In Greece and Rome, swimming ‘was part of martial training, an ele- mentary education for males. In the east, swimming goes back to at least 1000 B.C. In the 1700’s there was a law put forth that teaching swimming in schools was compul- 8 ory. Organized swimming events were held in the 1900’s before Japan was introduced to the west- ern world. The Romans built the very first “Heated” pool. Swimming lost its popularity in the middle ages because people believed that the “Plague” and other such contagious diseases were spread through water. Competitive swimming became Part of the very first Olympic Games held in 1896. The first two events were a race for sailors from ships in port and an obstacle course which involved climbing over a pole and swimming under a line of boats. Such odd events disappeared in 1909 when the Federation of Amateur Athletes was formed. Women were allowed to compete in the games in 1912, In 1969, swimming races mea- sured in yards weré changed to meters and the kinds of strokes were reduced to freestyle, back- stroke, breast and butterfly. Unlike many amateur sports, for example, Hockey, the equipment list which includes bathing suits, goggles, cap and perhaps fins, is comparatively inexpensive. }} Swimming has.a low injury rate NEW CAR FINANCING 1 a CONTINUES... “Until April 30/93 Swimming for fitness down through the ages and is proven beneficial for such ailments as asthma in children.
