By Rosaleen Garneau At Holy Cross School last Wednesday afternoon, 96 proud _ Students from three Georgetown. schools - Holy Cross, St. Francis of Assisi and Sacre Coeur - received certificates of achieve- ment in completing curriculum in D.A.RE. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). The D.A.R.E. program was developed in 1983 by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District to help children say no to drugs. It was so successful it spread across the United States and then to Oakville in 1989 through a combined effort of the Rotary Club and the Halton Regional Police Service. According to information from the D.A.R.E. Foundation “As of January 1993, with the coopera- tion of both the Halton Board of Education and the Halton Roman Catholic School Board, 6,700 Grade 6 students have successful- ly completed and graduated from the D.A.R_E. program in Halton.” It was evident the graduating stu- dents last Wednesday were appre- ciative of what they had learned and proud to declare their partici- pation in the program by sporting D.A.RE. T-shirts. The group of young people and relatives attending the ceremony were addressed by Constable Flameling, who had taught the 17- week program at St. Francis and Sacre Coeur. He said he wanted to impress upon the graduates that they have been provided with “life skills for the future” and it was up to them to make good decisions. He pointed out their decisions affect not only themselves but they are “role models for brothers and sisters and young people who ‘ook up to you”. The respect shown by the stu- dents for their peers as they pre- sented what they had learned from the program through speeches, raps and a skit, and the quality of the presentations themselves, demonstrated the likelihood these graduates will be good examples indeed to those who follow, per- haps even to some ahead. The program consists of 17 one- hour segments and uses a variety of techniques to teach self esteem, drug awareness, the influence of the media, and methods of saying no when approached to use drugs. AD.ARE. officer is given 80 hours of specific instruction and Constable Kartz, enjoying her first year as a D.A.R.E. officer, taught the program at Holy Cross. CN’s Transit Expansion Office was established in April 1990 to handle GO’s multi- pronged expansion program. ‘This will bring Provincial fund- ing of this office to $10.1 mil- lion since 1990. CN operates six of GO’s seven rail lines under contract to GO. D.A.R.E. program well received cult to tell in the classroom what was being absorbed but the essays, poems, raps, etc. which are written at the end of the pro- gram provide “great feedback” and the students “really take in a lot”. Each graduating — student received a certificate and shook hands with a panel of guests including the two D.A.R_E. offi- cers. Acting Inspector Dan Okuloski (Halton Regional Police), Danielle St. Aubin (D.A.R.E. Foundation), Lou Piovesan (H.R.C.S.S. board), and Mr. Black (principal, St. Francis). Constable Flameling thanked Tim Horton’s for supplying Tim Bits for the crown, Burger King for the juice, and Stock Transport for providing free transportation for St. Francis students. The D.A.R_E. Foundation con- tinues to be supported by the Rotary and other service clubs. It would welcome any contribution to help extend service to other schools.
