The story revolves around three young students: a mouse, a hedgehog, and a mole (known as “furlings”) and their schoolmaster, an aging badger. While the furlings and schoolmas- ter are on a field trip, a truck carrying Poisonous gas runs off the road and spills gas into their forest. When they their ronmental destruction and death. One of the students, a young female badger, is overcome by the gas when she tries to help her parents. In order to save her the schoolmaster needs certain herbs which were destroyed by the gas. The trio of young stu- dents therefore set off into uncharted Jands to find the herbs needed to save their friend. In their travels, the trio face numerous dangers, both natural and man-made. At one point they come across a flock of mourning birds. One of the young birds has been Caught in mud and has been given up for dead.
