While the plot is thin and predictable, the movie is rich in comic Dawn Wood Hollywood’s nostalgia craze just keeps churning on. Superman, Batman, The Addams Family, Popeye, and new Dennis the Menace comes to the silver screen. With his Home alone for- mula in hand, Dennis the Menace co-producer and screenplay writer, John Hughes, has come up with another winner. FS slapstick. Matthau is perfectly cast for the role of Mr. Wilson. He has the right demeanor and ability to portray restrained anger again and again. He even looks like the Mr. Wilson from Ketcham’s comic strip. Matthau is ably assisted by Joan Plowright, who plays Mrs. Wilson, bringing com- passion and heart to the movie. Dennis is played by 8- year old Mason Gamble. Switchblade Sam is just a little too sinis- ter and dirty (literally), given the light nature of the rest of the movie. While children are exposed to characters a lot worse than am in other movies (e.g., Freddy Kruger), parents should be conscious that an impact may be made on younger children that may need some attention. If there is a larger mes- sage to be gained from Hughes’ Dennis The Menace, it is located in the responsibility we all have for children in our society. Both of Dennis’ parents (Lea Thompson and Paul Winfield) work and no sup- port is offered by co-work- ers to help out with out-of- town job assignments. Even Mr. Wilson must come to, terms with his own feelings. for children and the priori- ties in his life. P.S.
