Notes Reg Witoszkin, Co- Chair of the volunteer com- mittee, “Our goal is simple, to help kindergarten students and their parents feel more 4 comfortable with the idea of riding a school bus. The ori- entation, open to all kinder- garten children in Halton, is a great way to accomplish that goal cooperatively.” The free sessions are neces- sary. Explains Co-Chair Heather Palmquist, “We know that starting school can be a scary experience for a child. And watching a little one get on a large bus and drive away can be equally scary for a parent. We want to help get rid of some of the stress and concern, and at the same time, deliver a few criti- cal messages about school bus safety. All parents of kindergarten children were informed of the day by letter in February. They were invited to come to a free orientation day which features a 30-minute class- room presentation on school bus safety, including a special Winnie the Pooh video and a 30-minute demonstration on a school bus, proper behavior on a school bus and crossing the street to get to a waiting bus. Students and parents will then get to ride together for a short school bus ride.
