Not intended to solicit properties already listed for sale Mackenzie development stalled By Oksana Buhel Assuming support. of Town of Halton Hills plan- ning staff, and having Promised to preserve the existing downtown Georgetown _ building, Sandy Mackenzie expected Prompt re-zoning approval from municipal councillors at Monday’s Town of Halton Hills council meet- ing. Councillors, however, voted to defer rezoning his Draper and James Sts. prop- erty until Sept.13, by which time they expect answers to their questions on parking. “T think it’s a great place to develop,” admitted Counc. Gail Rutherford,” but parking is a real bone of contention.” Mackenzie plans to con- vert the old stone building on the property (on the northeast corner) into a gen- eral commercial establish- ment, with five one-bed- room apartment units on the upper level. Based on the number of residences, and the area of commercial space, approximately 48 parking spaces are required. Mackenzie indicated only 22 parking stalls would be available, and some of these may not be functional. A report from the plan- ning department indicated the width of the nearby streets would exclude the option of on-street parking. When councillors learned Mackenzie owned a piece of property on the northwest corner, their interest was aroused. Counc. Anne Currie sug- gested this property be used for parking. Referring to the narrowness oo the property (28’ 132°), furl demanded, “What (else) can you do. with this land - in reality?” Mackenzie explained he planned to build a house, but area resident Cheryl Potosky challenged his con- cept, pointing out the cur- rent zoning of the land requires more frontage for a home than the property can offer. Potosky said her concern with Mackenzie’s applica- tion, like the councillors’, Tegarded parking. “I’m wor- tied people will start park- ing in the streets,” she said. Rutherford urged the deferral, suggesting the northwest property be con- sidered a part of the rezon-. ing application. “We need a big lever in this case,” Rutherford said. “I’ve dealt with Mr. Mackenzie before, and he doesn’t give an co > Drv, itchy skin?
