By Alex Tough . Canada almost made it! The, playoff match with Australia went to penalty kicks and Canada lost. The first half was all Australia and the Canadians managed only one shot on net, which was saved. The Aussies outplayed and out- ran the Reds with ease and should have taken the lead. As in the game two weeks ago, the Aussies scored in the dying seconds of the half. This was controversial as the referee was dealing with an argument and did not appear to signal a restart to play - from which the goal came. Two other deci- sioas were questionable to say the least. A home player pushed, or touched, the referee in the disagreement and was not ejected. Another deliberate- ly stopped:a breakaway with a handball and was only cautioned. Technically, another ejection by the tules. The second half saw @ change in Canada’s tactics and it came into the game as an attacking force. A good equalizer was the result. The Aussies then scored a scrap- py goal to take the game lead and send the match into overtime. The overtime wamrtied and the penalty kick shot-out took place and our lads failed to convert three-of- five for the loss. A valiant effort nevertheless. The Inter County league meeting this Thursday (tomorrow) will begin early due to several player and i i Meteor a game or two. The league committee will have to decide these cases and the results will have a direct bearing on first division placings on’the last day. Meteor leads the first division and looks to have the title sewn up. Leading the second divi- sion is Eagles, which will wait for the Falcons vs. Caledon result before cele- brating. If Caledon win or tie, they take first place for the season, their first in the league. Falcons will finish third in the second division, a position they. did not like achieving a few weeks ago. Meadowvale is likely to take third place in the first division, dependent upon itt decisions. and Merseyside may have played ineligible players in Winchester and Ajax will finish bottom dogs in first Hornets sport new colors in tourney By Ruth D. Taylor Looking fabulous in their new aqua, spiced-with-purple soccer uniforms, the Halton Hills Hornets Under-11 girls Select team played their first out-of-town tourna- ment in Brampton on Aug. 8. While winning only one out of three games, the low scores indicate potential for other summer tournaments, as Halton Hills played with only two substitutes. The first game against Scarborough start- ed slowly as the Hornets settled into their positions. In. the second half, midfielders Sharilyn Kogan and Julie Thompson and defense Stephanie Fielding started to get the ball to the forwards. Halton Hills held the Scarborough team to the 2-0 score achieved by Scarborough in the first half from penal- ty kicks. The second game was a winner for the Hornets, 1-0 over the Bolton Canadian Tire team. Hornet forwards dominated and kept ‘play on the Bolton half so there were no shots‘on Halton Hills goalie Alyssa Taylor. Laura Shields, Kathryn Weston and Krystal Westman played close to Bolton net and Danielle King scored the goal. Forward Amanda Burgan moved her birthday party so that she could play soccer; therefore, a rousing Happy Birthday was sung before the last game for luck. This did not lead to a win, however, against a’strong Streetsville team. Defense players Mary Krasnay, Meighan Mcintyre, Melanie Sherren and Melissa Maveal worked hard to keep ahead of the Streetsville forwards. The final score was 3- 0 as a result of fast footwork and shots in the second half by a good Streetsville strik- Halton Hills This Week, Wednesday, August 18, 1993 — Page13 Valiant effort by Canada falls short and second sections respec- tively. Then it is off to the playoffs. Merseyside; Mariners, Blazers and Caledon will figure in the open draw for the semi-finals of the Knock Out Challenge Cup. Now to last matches. Meteor took out Winchester 4-1 after a little bit of early bother. Merseyside won, on the field, with a 5-1 defeat of Blazers. Mariners outplayed Meadowvale and lost 1-0 to alate goal. The officiating had to be seen and heard to be believed. The Mariner play- ers also let the referee’s per- formance get to them and were affected accordingly - downwards! Eagles blasted Ajax 8 or 9 - 1, depending upon which report is cor- rect. It was all too easy for the strong Eagles. Caledon came, saw and conquered what United had “to offer by 5-1, and were arrogant with it all Falcons recorded an away 2-0 win over Stingers.
