When buying skates, do keep a few things in mind. They should provide a snug, comfortable fit around the instep and heel and there should be enough room to wiggle the toes. They should be made of a firm material to help support the ankle. Do not get skates several sizes too big to allow The sooner skaters get off the ankles and onto the skate blades, the sooner the skater will know and love the joys of skating. The blade should be made of a good stainless steel so that it will glide smoothly and stay sharp. To learn to skate whether you want to just learn to skate for fun or to play hock- ey or to go into figure skat- ing, your local skating club has the program for you. It is called the “CANSKATE” program. You can do’a 1, 2 or 3-day program. It is for boys or girls between 3 to 12 years old. The fundamentals of skat- ing are taught by qualified professional coaches and assisted by qualified amateur instructors. This includes for- ward and backward skating, stopping, turning, jumping and the four basic edges. These fundamentals prepare skaters to begin figure skat- ing, hockey, ringette, speed skating and recreational skat- ig.
