The- success of Men In Tights comes from Brooks downplaying the more schlocker and disjointed side that we saw in Space Balls. Men In Tights, for instance, features a comprehensive sto- ryline which places the gags and double entendres within a context. This creates a build- ing process, giving the come- dy texture and depth. This movie also benefits from an excellent cast. Robin Hood is played by Cary Elwes, who is able to boast that the people of England will follow him because he has a real English accent. Elwes does not overplay the part and is quite comfortable moving to his goal — the restoration of King Richard (Patrick sews — while the jokes and slapstick. The Sherriff of Rottingham (rotting ham...get it?) is played by Roger Rees, well known becca’s oversuc- cessful boyfriend in the tele- vision sitcom Cheers. Rees puts in a fine acting perfor- mance. In fact, the sword duels- with Elwes certainly rival, if not outperform, the. duels in Prince of Thieves. Marian is played by Amy Yasback who, like Elwes, escapes having to deliver corny jokes and is left to develop the central storyline. Brooks plays the Rabbi Tuckman, as a replacement for Friar Tuck. By limiting himself to this one acting role Brooks is able to check his ego and the movie benefits from it. There are a number of arances. The most memorable is Dom DeLuise’s presentation of Don Giovanni — the Godfather. DeLuise is very convincing in his takeoff of Marlon Brando, providing the movie’s deepest level of humor. If you are looking for a change of pace to this sum- mer’s suspense thrillers and need a good laugh, then Men In Tights is just the ticket.
