‘Georgetown seniors get temporary site * By Les Mellish Special to HHTW Town of Halton Hills Council and Seniors of Georgetown have approved the use of 4,000 sq. ft. of space in the Indoor Mall, 318 Guelph Street, as a tem- porary site for a seniors ntre. This proposal was put forward in a report to the General Committee of Council by the Director and Parks, Tom Shepard on Sept. 27. Council approved the acceptance of this report and went on to pass the appropriate by-law as required by the provincial government it is Elderly Persons Act. Seniors approved this lan unanimously at a General Meeting on Oct. 6. This was attended by 112 Seniors and councillor Cook, Chatten, Gastle and Joy. Thompson of the Recreation, and Parks Pea and members of the medi The ext step is for the town to apply for the provincial operating grant. It should be kept in mind that council will go ahead with this plan only if they receive an annual operating grant. However, the seniors board believes that, provid- ed the location and plan for a seniors centre dre accept- able, it is inconceivable that Georgetown -would be denied an operating grant while Milton, Oakville, Burlington and other com- munities. all over the province are receiving such grants. We do require an early approval by the provincial government so that we can get into the building and finish the area we shall be using. In the meantime, we have to plan the program of activities and the internal structure required and its decor. For that we will be seeking your help and that of other members of the community with the neces- sary skills and abilities. Seniors-are responsible for finishing the interior and for everything that goes into it. The town, with the province, are providing the space and~a coordinator half-time. The seniors, through membership fees and fund-raising, will con- tribute about $6,000 per year towards the operating 2 ost. Funds of the association will be used to finish the interior and we hope that New Horizon grants will help to furnish it. The centre will be run by seniors for seniors. It is smaller than is needed but it is-a start. It is up to Georgetown seniors to make it work with such an overwhelming success that more space is needed to adequately service the growing number of seniors 55 and over in the area. The centre will be man- aged by an operating com- mittee not yet clearly defined and a series of com- mittees for fundraising, membership, public rela- tions and the various activi- ties.
