The week of Oct. 17 to 23 has been proclaimed Foster Parent Week in Ontario, to recognize the important work that foster parents do: providing a caring, safe, temporary home for chil- dren who can’t stay with their own families. It’s being celebrated in a variety * of ways. Alex and her husband Craig, a physician, have been foster parents for three years now and have cared for more than 30 children in their home. “I always knew I wanted to be a foster parent,” Alex says. “Craig and I have always been active in the community, doing volunteer work and we really care about children. I find it very rewarding. Alex also finds that being part of a foster family is rewarding for her own chil- dren. The Irishes have two children, one born to them and one adopted and Alex says: “Having foster chil- dren stay with us has been very positive for them, I see them becoming more sensi- tive and understanding of others.” As well as taking care of the children, Alex has been very active in the Foster Parent community and is currently President of the Foster parent Association in Halton. She's also a region- al representative for the Foster Parents Society of Ontario and works with the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies. On Oct. 21, she"ll be right there with the other dedicat- ed foster parents as Foster Parent Week is proclaimed. They hope this special pre- sentation will raise aware- ness of the need for more foster parents throughout the province. Interested in knowing more about foster parent- ing?
