Friends is a unique program that matches vol- unteers from the community with elementary-aged school children who have » been identified by a school- based team as those who. Although mectings between the volunteer and the child take place during school hours and on school property, the visits are non- academic’ in nature. Volunteers are trained to help students talk about their feelings, their relation- ships with peers, to recog- nize their abilities and to generally “feel good” about themselves and their accom- plishments. In other words, their aim is to foster posi- tive self-esteem and social growth/in the child.
