By Mike Zrostek Georgetown District High School ‘Rasslin’ Rebels’ are preparing for what the’re hoping is. going to be one of their biggest-wrestling sea- son’s ever. Coached by Jim Hall, for- mer OFSAA (Ontario Federation of Secondary Athletic Association) wrestling champions Bill Davis and Geoff Moon along with Nick Daniels who is new to GDHS, provide the corner stone for a strong coaching staff. With practices. underway, Hall is hoping to attract a humber of newcomers, stressing that anybody who attends practices will stay on the team. Last year’s had 30 team members and Hall hopes to have more grapplers this year to fill all the weight classes ranging from 83 pounds to the heavy weight division. GDHS ran camps for grade eight students at Stewarttown and Centennial in hopes of getting more stu- dents interested in wrestling, a sport that’s popularity is .GDHS.mat-men have high-hopes once again rising. “It’s a popular sport tradi- tionally,”says Hall. “There has been a lapse for a. couple of years, but it’s a good sport for kids because of all the ages and the different weight divisions.” The Rebels, who had a number of junior and senior Halton champs as well as competitors at GHAC and OFSAA and GHAC last year have many veterans returning to the team. 2 The goal of the wrestling team, says Hall, is to finish first or second in Halton and the Rebel coach thinks this will be the team’s best year to date: = Veterans returning to the squad include team captains Colin Kay and Mike Large, who both wrestled at OFSAA last year. = Other vets returning are Ian Cox, Kevin Whithers, Mike Deryck, Jason Myers and Jason Titus. Both Kay and Cox spent one'week this past summer at a wrestling camp in Pennsylvania. The first meet for the Rebels will be Nov. 19 in Mississauga. The one Hall is looking forward to the tour- nament GDHS will be host- ing Dec. 4th. Athletes will compete in . the rookie tournament from all over the area, with Hall expecting over 300 students who have never wrestled before, participating.” It will be a busy year for the Rebel wrestling team involving tournaments in Guelph, Burlington, St.Catharines, Brampton, Hamilton, Toronto, Milton, Orillia, Montreal and Kitchener.
