They are also the questions movie audiences are being asked to consider today in Steven Spielberg’s new epic film Schindler’s List. Schindler’s List is the true story of industrialist Oskar Schindler, who, during World War II saved over 1,100 Jewish men, women and children from the gas chamber. On the surface, the f one man’s fight for justice against authority would seem to be familiar ground for Spielberg. Schindler’s List is as different from all previous Spielberg films,*as night is from day, and hot'from cold. Gone are Spielberg’s trade- mnark flashy camera work and manipulative sentiment. Shot in black and white, Movie Review Schindler’s List is a stark, gritty and realistic look at the greatest tragedy of modern times - the Holocaust. The brilliance of Schindler’s List lies in Spielberg’s ability to blend moments which document the massive ‘human destruction in the Holocaust with those marking its toll on a more per- sonal level of the victims. One day, while surveying the activities of the camp from his villa’s balcony, Goeth no qualms or forethought, Goeth raises a rifle and kills the young woman. In Schindler’s List, the vio- lence erupts out of nowhere, without provocation and-hits like a hammer. Shot straight up, it is unyielding in its force ty. It would be misleading to label Schindler’s List a depressing film because while documenting the atrocities of the Holocaust, Spielberg also -aptures the hope and courage of its victims.
