Lucy's Norval: L.M. Montgomery in Halton Hills
Welcome to Lucy's Norval
Best known for international bestseller and classic novel, Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery has been a household Canadian name since Anne’s first publication in 1908. Although many imagine Montgomery living in the picturesque setting of Prince Edward Island thanks to her novels, she did in fact live in Ontario for 31 years, including almost 10 years in Norval.

From 1926 to 1935, Montgomery and her family lived in the charming hamlet within Esquesing Township (now Halton Hills). Although very different from her original island home, Montgomery loved her time in Norval and wrote about it positively in her journals. Historic businesses and locations, important community members and groups, and daily events all feature in her personal memories of the hamlet.

This exhibit explores Montgomery’s time living in Norval, from the locals she befriended to the stores she did her shopping at. Experience Norval in the 1920s and 1930s as Montgomery would have as you move through the exhibit and feel a local connection to this world-famous, beloved author.
