When the Fenians did cross the border at Buffalo, the militia who met them had great courage and enthusiasm, but little training or equipment. Some of the units which took part in the battle of Ridgeway were indepen-dent companies, such as those from Caledonia and York on the Grand River. The new organization focused on county regiments, and batallions raised in September and October 1866 in many Ontario counties are the ancestors of regiments which this year celebrate their 125th anniversary; The Grey and Simcoe Foresters, The Elgin Regiment, The Ontario Regiment, The Lome Scots, The Brockville Rifles, The Highland Fusiliers of Canada, and The Lanark and Renfrew Scottish. This picture is from the archives of the Esquesing Historical Society. It was included in the Oliver Hunter collection. Can anyone identify the man in the Lome Scots uniform? (p587)
