The full narrative will be available in Collections III this Spring. John Stewart Jr. (1808 - 1899) was raised in his family home on the 3rd line, Esquesing. His family came to Canada in 1817 and settled in Esquesing in 1819. They built the first frame house in the Township in 1827. It was from the front steps of this home that William Lyon Mackenzie made speeches to Esquesing Reformers, for whom the Scotch Block was the centre of support. The home, "Craiglea" still exists and was the first property protected under the Heritage Act by Heritage Halton Hills, in 1988. GEORGE LESLIE'S DIARY "In its early years Georgetown supporters gave the "rebel" W.L. Mackenzie, sanctuary. Tales of the adventures of William Lyon Mackenzie during the latter part of the rebellion of Upper Canada were related from Mr. George Leslie's diary, 5th line, Esquesing, which he kept for over 61 years, not having missed a day in it, a most treasured possession. My father used to mind the cattle while my grandfather, George Leslie, a pioneer of Peel County, went to fight against Mackenzie, tooth and nail, and altho they were on opposite sides of the fight, the funny part of it is they were always the best of friends.
