Mark Rowe ARCHIVAL NEWS The Archives will be hiring a student again this summer. Applications will be accepted by Geoff Cannon at the Library and by Man Power office. April 6th was Archives Awareness Day and the Archives Association of Ontario sent several suggestions to ensure the importance of Archives is emphasized. Please consider supporting the archives of Ontario this summer by trying one of the following: 1. Volunteer at the EHS Archives. Call Mark Rowe to arrange a time to help out. 2. Visit an Archives if you've never seen one. Our own EHS Archives is at Georgetown Library, Peel Heritage Complex is in Brampton, Wellington County Archives is between Fergus and Elora... the list goes on. 3. Check out the municipal archives at the Civic Centre. Arrange an appointment to peruse the assessment rolls from days gone by. 4. Become an ambassador for your archives and encourage people to donate items. 5. Write a letter to the editor to praise the EHS archives and its resources. 6. Make a donation to the EHS Archives: financial or otherwise. INTERNET CONNECTIONS The Esquesing Historical Society now has an official web site on the World Wide Web. You can visit us at <www.hhpl on.casigs/ehs/home.html> Send your e-mail to rowem@aztec-net.com or dlvngstn@stn.net EHS NEWSLETTER This newsletter was prepared by John Mark Rowe with assistance from Karen Hunter, Dawn Livingstone and Jean Ruddell. The Society will publish a summer edition this year as a form of advertising. It will be given out to perspective members during the summer events. The summer edition will contain a selection of newsletter items from the past year and will include a membership form. Members of the Society will NOT be receiving this special edition, since you have the full edition of each newsletter at home. Please have a look at it at our summer venues, but do leave it behind for a future member of the Society. Thanks! MEMBERSHIP TELEPHONE COMMITTEE As published in the last newsletter, the Society voted to end telephone reminders about meetings to local members. The executive would like to thank the ladies past and present who served on that committee. Many people commented favourably on the polite reminders they received. Thanks again! SCHOOL RECORDS One of our summer projects will be to transcribe the names in Esquesing school records - a great boon for family history. If anyone has registers at home that they want to hang onto to, would you consider iending it so that we could transcribe the names? Contact Mark Rowe or Geoff Cannon at the Library. FAMILY HISTORY SEARCHES Due to the increasing demand for information on local history and local families, the Esquesing Historical Society executive decided to institute a minimum charge for searches. Since we have provided so much information on the internet for free, we feel justified in joining the ranks of volunteer organizations that charge a fee for time and materials. Therefore effective immediately, there will be a minimum Esquesing Historical Society Newsletter 3
