daughter of mr and mrs norman robertson suffered severe in juries when she was knocked down on the pavement toy a car driven by arthur gamble and owned by his brother mr ray gamble- in an effort to avoid the accident arthur drove thecar to the other side of the highway and crashed headon into a telephone pole ray who was in the front seat with him was thrown against the windshield with such person is dead and two others are in hospital suffering from serious injuries as the result of a motor accident on the guelphhamilton highway abput five miles south of guelph on sunday occupant of a heavy sedan driven by james russell prominent fergus mer chant mrs george gllby of dallas texas sustained fatal injuries when the machine left the highway at a sharp turn near the village of aherfoyle and crashed into a hydro poler mrs gllby received severe head injuries and both legs were fractured she died while be ing rushed to hospital mrs elizabeth russell wife of the driver is in the general hospital guelph with a broken hip and a deep cut in the forehead while george gllby husband of the dead woman is in st josephs hospital guelph suffering from a severe gash in the hesd and bruises and policy between the provincial federal departments of agriculture at the instigation of the halton district holsteln breeders club in all twenty one boys started out with a calf all calves- were born recommendations from ihe agricultural representative through per sonal visits and calf club meetings the following method of scoring- will indicate that the high boy must be an all round stock man as breeds locally rev dr w s mctavish the death of rev dr w s mac- tavish retired presbyterian minister which decurxed suddenly early tuesday october 4 at his home in belleville removes one of the most notable figures in the life of the church and of the province william s mactavlsh b d- phd was born near acton in nassaga weya township halton county 76 years ago the son of the- late archlbaldand mary macmlllan mactavlsh he was of scottish descent and ever took a deep interest in the history of the land of his forebears he received his primary edu cation in the schools of halton and then proceeded to rockwood academy and later to georgetown academy he studi ed at the university of toronto and knox college and soon after his gradua tion fromthe latter institution he enter ed the presbyterian ministry he also spent a year in postgraduate work in the union seminary new york city this couege later conferring orj him the degree of doctor pfphllosophy for a ume jduring his couegfe- years he taught school in guelph his first ministerial charge was at st george and only monday he received an invitation from his old church there to be present at its approaching 100th anniversary he served as minister at the church of the redeemer in deser- onto for ten years at cooks church kingston for slx years and at st peters church madoc for seven years he retired from the active ministry at the lastmentioned place some ten years ago when he removed to belleville to take up residence there although retir ed from the- active ministry of his church dr mactavlsh had until within a month supplied in numerous pulpits throughout ontario not only on his own denomination but those of other pro testant churches since residing in belleville he had been a member of st andrews presbyterian church dr mactavlsh was ever active with his pen and for many years had supplied toron to and various ontario newspapers with articles oh christian endeavor work on prohibition and on church questions in general he had thousands of his articles published in the papers 6t canada and the united states dr mactavlsh at the time- of his death was a member of the board of education of belleville and has been an aotlve participant in its meetings the prohibition cause in this province loses one of its ablest and most pronounced supporters he was a liberal and as- soclated himself presbytery of paris and kingston and of the committee on the state of religion he edited a number of textbooks on missions and a- good load of articles stolen the thieves gained entrance by dreaking the upper half of a rear window and pulling the upper light completely put inside the garage a crank was taken from one of the trucks and the coriier of the glass in the office door was broken and the lock on the door opehed to gain entrance to this part of the garage a couple of flashlights were taken from the trucks and some of the best cans of oil in the office a crate of eggs and two baskets of peaches were stolen the stock of cigarettes and cigars was looted and almost entirely taken chocolate bars in as large a quantity as possible were stolen a small amount at am erican money was taken from a box at the side of the register and a wrist watch belonging to lome i walters driver of one of the transports was stolen from a drawer in the office desk it is quite apparent that the thieves were hot disturbed and had plenty of tunc as they made a good haul and left little or no traces behind them it is hardly possible for mr tyler to make an ac curate checkup of all the articles that were stolen but the loss win be consider able a car was noticed about town that evening the occupants of which acted rather suspiciously two or three of the empty cartons which had contained the stolen goods were recovered on the third line east of acton the following day chief mcpherson and provincial constable cookman are investigating the theft but thus far have made no arrests various
