probable that not one could tell you all sorts of qiikpr fpbnn vntvp hr riven it is said for example that the- duke of cumberland ho was playing cards at the time wrote the order for the mas sacre of glencoe on a card which hap pened to be the nine of diamonds an other suggested reason is that in one old card game the nine of diamonds was a kind of joker which beat any other card this game ruined many scottish families when introduced by mary queen of scots the real reason is curious and interesting a scotsman john dalrjr- mple earl of stair was mainly res ponsible as secretary of state for bringing about the massacre of glencoe and for this reason he earned the hatred of his countrymen the arms of the dalrymple family had nine lozenges or diamond shapes arranged as they are on the playing card owing to the res emblance the custom grew up of touch ing the card whenever it appeared and saying the curse of scotland be on you do not chase happiness thepeople who are all the time won dering about their popularity are seldom well liked those who are constantly seeking happiness are generally extreme ly discontented it is quite astonishing how the things they pursue evade them one who never bothers a hb poyu- larity but goes his way doing kind deeds as a matter of course is frequently sur prised to find how many friends he has he who does the days work heartily and without selfpity is very likely when his task is done to and happiness wait ing to walk home with him madame haboush who assises in the- musical travelogue being presented here by the galilean shepherd fish week l canadas frii fish week will be observed this year from october 34 to october 31 inclusive the observance lias been arranged for by the dminhlan griwlm amtnchnhrm a nationwide organization and the plan of setting aside a particular week in the year for the purpose of directing special attention to the national- importance of the fishing industry and the diet value of canadian fisheries products has the cordial approval of the dominions fish eries authorities comment at the de partment of fisheries today was to the effect that while fish week is planned by the industry itself the department is keenly interested in it and commends it to popular xotice some ot the most interesting research work in connection with foodstuffs in recent years it was said at the de partment has centred about the health values of fish and shellfish and very important discoveries have been made it has been found out lor instance that fish foods contain vitamins which are essential to health particularly vitamin d which is most valuable in tne diet oi growing children because it prevents such troubles as rickets different foods contain vitamins of course but fish have been found to be richer in vita min d than pther foodstuffs then too it has been ascertained that fish and especially shellfish are beneficial in cases of anaemia while of course it has been- known lor some time past that sea fish and shellfish have much larger content of iodine the great goitre- preventative than any other foods when it is also remembered that fish contain such elements as calcium the bone and teeth building substance and that they are nourishing and easily digested it is easy to see why their use is stressed increasingly by diet author ties i canadian fish are available in such variety and such satisfactory quality that there is no need for anyone in the the dominion to buy imported goods canadas fisheries resources are remark able both in extent and in the variety of fish and sbeljflsh certainly say it this year camp couldnt have been better we told you last year about the five little bunkhouses and the contests to keep each the cleanest and best and about the dining hall and cook house even the cows knew how nice it was for the first night we were there they came to see us the girls in our bunk- house were all slumbering peacefully t when we were awakened by crunch- crunch crunch you may imagine- our feelings then fearfully peaking out we saw cows here there an ev we were rather relieved to see they werej cows but we didnt feel any too kindly towards them so one of the boldest snatched up her belt waved it over her head banged it on the side of the house let out a whoop and ran after them the cows went but meanwhile all the rest of the guides waked up and wanted to know what all the rumpus was about personally i think they preferred the noise of the cows eating grass to the noise of them being chased hut being guides were too polite to say so how ever this shows that cows know their camps t think nature must have seen what a grand camp it was and so did her best to make it even better the weather couldnt have been better it was sunny all the time except one afternoon when it rained a little but just enough to freshen the swimming water and swim ming you just visit our guide room and see the chart on which all the stars are which we gained this year hardly ever varied camp fire was the very best time during the day sitting around a warm blazing fire with the trees softly swaying and the dark shadows moving back and forth around us they were swell
