stand how it was that nathan browning had been elected to member ship in cap and bells in his freshman year although nathan later developed into one of the greatest half backs raritan ever had known and became a recognized campus leader he was one of the greenest and most difficult young sters ever to try for admission at he registrars office during the past thirty years i have been told many strange sales and have lived through many unusual experiences but the case of nathan browning was one of the strangest of ail nathan came to college from a small high school he was tall rangy and almost painfully thin he had a shock of thick strawcolored hair and pale blue eyes which held in their depths a reckless look which marked hlrnl as a young man- who would need careful guidance x saw nan first on the afternoon be fore the opening of the term i was standing at the entrance to kings building watching the students return- from their summer vacation because i am something of a campus character having been night watchman for the past thirty years theyjau knew me and stopped to shake hands and exchange words of greeting to the freshmen of j course i must have looked like an or dinary- workman oneof the janitors or ground- keepers- no one had told them that- x had once tieen a college man myself and that even the faculty treated me with respect i was not surprised therefore when a tall youth carrying a battered suit case stopped in front of me and spoke rather arrogantly say old man- will you tell me where wlllets hall is he asked over there i answered and pointed to the ivycovered dormitory he regarded me indolently im tir ed he said ill give you two bits if youll carry my bag to my room its number sixteen for an instant anger flared upwlthtn me then i smiled til go over with you for nothing i told him we went together to his room on the third floor of the building a single room which looked directly out upon the campus thanks old chap he said sure you wont take the two bits no i answered and seated myself on the- edge of his cot im not the- janitor i explained but the night watchman and ive held this job since before you ware horn kverydoay cans me general cobb tve heard about you- from- an old grad he announced and held out bis hands my name is nathan browning nat for short and im a freshman 3olng to like it here i asked i shall if the sophomores let me alone he said but if they try any thing funny theyll have a battle on their hands what youd better do i told him gravely is to take what they give you without saying anything about it he shook his head not for me im standing up for my rights youd better think it over i sug gested apparently however he decided to maintain his attitude of defiance to the established rules of class tactics before aee1tt5acrpsssed he became known throughout the campus as thciiiost troublesome member of the freshman class he refused to wear the black cap with its green button refused to report for the big pecrade to the football field on the second day of practice and failed to apear at the quad room on four successive evenings when the vfresli were put through their stunts if you dont mend your ways i said to him one afternoon when we met on the campus youll be selected for the special halloween celebration of the sophs whats that he asked curiously every year i ex the fresh- man who has made- the most trouble is taken out by the sophomores on hair lowecn and what they do tohim well youll be likely tolearn that for yourself nathan nodded thoughtfully thanks tor thewarnrngl i didnt know i was tempted to tell him more but decided against it for many years i had been a witness to that special hal loween ceremony it was the custom of the sophomores to pick out the freshest freshman to dress him in ludicrous uniform and take him to monument square in the centre of town there he gas put through a series of stunts with several hundred townfolks looking on at the end lie was ducked 1 in the fountain and sent scampering back to the dormitory i have never known one of these unfortunatcvlctlms who did not settle down afterttistt v nathan browning his defiance damp ened somewhat by my words of warning kept as quiet as possible during the next ew weeks he was already a marked man in his class however and the sophomore president told me that in all probability browning would be selected as the freshest freshman nathan did not know that of course and so he reported for the football team and showed some promise of developing into a- good half back if he had not ien so thin he would have made the teim because of his ability to pass the bad he was rather weak on defense how ever and so he was relegated to the second squad he was disappointed and a hit mortified but he did not quit watching him on the football field 1 decided that he had in him the mak ings of a real man he was absolutely fearless and the wonder of it was that he did not receive serious injury if he could take on ten pounds said the coach wed make an allcanadian player out of him nathan was popular with the members of the squad but the sophomores had marked him as their own i was not at all surprised when on the night be fore halloween browning joined me at about ten oclock while i was making a casual round of the buildings general he said ive just had a summons from the sophs torwhat i asked it only says to report at the river bank at the end of college avenue at nine oclock tomorrow night you know what it means dont you i asked he nodded ruefully that tm the freshest freshman i suppose right you are i said- for a moment he was silent then suddenly he turned to me defiantly if they expect to get away wtlh that they have another think coming im going to tell them all hat i think of them no i said youre going to take your medicine like a man after ali you had- it coming to- you he waited for quite a while his hands thrust in his pockets his lips a straight red line in the semi-darkness- finady he spoke all right he said grimly ill go through with it without another word he turned and entered the dormitory when he was gone i seated myself on the steps of the porch and tried to convince myself that it was all for the best i was not entirely sure for nathan in spite of his early arrogance was rather sensi tive the experience of making a spec tacle of himself before several hundred people might possibly injure him beyond repair might even ruin his college career what he needed i decided was encouragement rather than humiliation that reckless look inhjs eyes was not to be ignored there was notblfig i could do about it however and j had just stood up to start another round of inspection when the door of the dormitory opened and tnnw onrriphiib wimp nlih lane was also a freshman a tall sophlsticatedchapwho had- entered college from one of the larger prepara tory schools he was the same size as r browning not quite sothin but with the same brushy hair there however the resemblance ceased for lane was wealthy seirassured and very much a man of the world he was al ready mentioned as a candidate for the presidency of his class and was admit tedly one of the freshman leaders in spite of his many good qualities how ever there was something about him which did hot appeal to me hello general he said in a voice which was not entirely natural whith er bound nowhere especially i answered can you spare a little timp with me2i i assuredhimthati could r we sat down on the top step lane with his elbows on his knees and his chin cupped th his hands i have been elected to cap and bells he annouced and have been requested to report for initiation tomorrow night thats fine i told him he smiled- twlstedly im not going to go he said why he spoke so softly that i could barely hear him tm afraid general for the next half hour i tried to convince lane that he was making a big mistake the highest honor that could come to a freshman i- explained was membership in cap and bells only six men would be elected and he was one of the chosen i could not help com paring him with nathan browning nathan had met his test without flinch ing and lane hail failed nathan was the better man all through the next day however i worried about him late in the after noon john becker chairman o5 the sophomore halloween committee gath ered together a group of his classmates and collected all the old barrels and other inflammable material they could find john explained to me that they were going to have a real celebration this year something that this fresh man browning will remember as ldng as he lives m when darkness fell- i stood at hie campus entrance nearest to town find watched curiously while groups of chil dren dressed -in- every conceivable cos tume marched down the 1 street and stopped at houses along the way for contributions of apples and candy against my better judgment i left the main campus shortly before eightthirty and strolled up college avenue in my mind was the thought that possibly i might talk with nathan and urge- him hot to take the affair too seriously the night was dark with scurrying clouds obscuring the sky when i came to the end of the avenue i could not see him as i waited indcisiifiy rl discovered three vague figures on the river bank i moved closer for i knew that it was not yet time for the sopho- imores to come af tor nathan the big event was not scheduled until nine oclock out of the shadows a voice reached ne freshman said the voice harsh ly prepare to meet your doom for a moment i was puzzled then suddenly i realized what had happened the voice was that of daniel langley president of the cap and bells honorary society daniel and the others had mis taken nathan for lane cornelius the two were the same size and had the same busby hair already nathans face was covered from forehead to chin with a black handkerchief three other students came down the rood leading five candidates when all had gathered in a group i stepped out of the shadows and joined them they glanced up in indignant surprise then recognizing me they nodded al most three decades ago i had been initiated into cap and bells i should have told them of course that- they had the wrong man but i said never a word i knew that lane cornelius was a coward and that nathan browning needed only the proper encouragement to become one of the biggest leaders that raritan had ever known so i permitted the initia tion to proceed the sophomore mem bers of the society ledthe freshmen to a field bordering the river made them duck for apples in approved halloween styled and gleefully pushed their reads beneath thewater they made them sing songs give speeches and bat one another about the head with rolled newspapers the paddling which lane had mentioned had eoo discontinued three years ago f when the horseplay had ended daniel langley read the constitution and the initiates took the pledge in unison drawing off the black handkerchiefs the members of the society then extended their hands to the new brothers and discovered nathan i indignantly they demanded explana tion nathan- had none to give until near the end he had believed this to be a part of the halloween celebration then when he had started to protest they had silenced him puzzled not knowing quite what to do daniel turned to me what about it general he asked its- a case of mistaken identity i said undoubtedly nathan and lane were ordered to report at the same place but lane did not come why not he was afraid of being paddled i answered hes a coward dan in that case said daniel were well rid of him but how about this fellow i hes been fresh i said evenly but he knows that hes made a mistake and wants- to moke up for it in another two years hes going to be a great foot ball player and ive heard that he was an allstar centre in basketball all that he needs is some encouragement to become a big campus leader and you ha given lilm that tonight by taking him i cap and bells do you think he deserves it yes i said daniel turned to the others the general is willing to sponsor him he announced what do you men say they decided after brief conference that nathan had already been initiated intocap and bells they gave him the grip and welcomed him as a fellow member nathan still dazed by the turn of events took the pledge to uphold the honor of the society the fact that in his- senior year he was elected captain of the football team and voted the man who has done most for the- college has no particular place in this story lane cornelius has lane it seems although standing by his decision be c imb with chtr euriosityt shortly before nlneoclockhcwakedto the end of college avenue and stood at the river bank a few minutes later the sophomores came for nathan browning and found lane there they waited for a time keeping lane with them angered finally at nathans failure to appear they decided to sub stitute the other freshmtutwho had so miraculously been waiting at the desig nated meeting plaeei- they joined their classmates on the campus lighted their torches dressed lane as a country mold arid carried out the programme as planned lane angry but helpless played his partwifh poor grace and escaped as soon as pos sible to the dormitory the next day a truck came to the youthrtfcaoe ignoring the orders of doctors about the diet she should observe liantly colored in all shades of the rain bow here one can find leaves of a rich orange shading into a delicate primrose there are also wonderful shades of mauve purple dark blue and crimson this sounds as if the wood belonged to fairyland but the trees showing these marvellous colors- have simply been sub jected to a scientific process which has nothing magical about it special chem- icalsjiave been dug into the soil round the roots of the trees and these have been drawn up with the sap so that not only the leaves but finally the wood has been colored somd years ago a scientist discovered that it was a simple matter to tinge growing wood with any desired shade an enterprising forester decided to try the plan on a wood of saplings which had only started to grow into trees the staining of the trees in this way naturally takes time but the first beltsjire almost ready the wood from this forest will be used in the making of furniture the many- hued leaves which first strike the ob servers are not of great importance what matters far more is the wonderful colored wood in the heart of the tree gilding the lily in annapolis valley puildi itk cbntracto awempiannedhonfe the
