uelilrnca hi edndrjaj- it has a place for all last week we had the privilege of viewing the 138 boxes that were packed and rendy to be for warded to the boys from acton and district overseas we know lots of them will get parcels too from home and friends at christmas but as we looked at them we thought qf the similarity there would be in unpacking them to the day when the christmas gifts were tucked into stockings and some of the im portant ones wcrcaway down in the toe sure some will have more christmas gifts than others but its a comforting thought to know that every man overseas from acton and district will have one christmas box to open it docsnt matter where lolltsarewhen deccmhcr2mhrpjls round its christ mas und a timeto think of home but those christmas boxes arc only a part of the year round work that acton and vicinity war services league carries on right now while many places are scurrying around to organize for the col lection of scrap metal this organization has an ef ficient plan in opefationthat keeps all the salvage constantly gathered up and shipped back into war production theres scarcely a section of the war ef fort where the league doesnt give guidance and help theres another fine feature too that since- all the organizations of acton and district have repre sentatives on the body the overlapping of events for raising money and the doubling up of effort is greatly curtailed its small wonder that as time goes on the meetings held every two weeks find more and more work for their attention again we explain the acton and vicinity vtar service league is a community group theres work and a place on it tor every one rtttlls dlsti ici and if youre not associated with it directly or through some of the organizations affiliated with the league you are missing an opportunity for doing a com- munitv war service we like it we like the plan that has been followed the past two years in education week in acton of holding tnt plan of parents night it the happy medium be tween the old school concert days ajid the period just vosed hen ndoccasion wan presented forjar- cuts and friends to show a practical intercut and too often the visits to the school were liable to be when troublo had occurred rather than of a friendly and better acquainted type f v may the leaaona learned rewaln there are many tiling for which the war may be blessed and among them is a regulating to more reasonable hours the times at which retail establish ments are open garages and service stations up until the war made restrictions necessary were an other giup of which the general public expected too much in the way of service atlall hdurs for some time it has keen realized that it was not essential for aaton stores to be open both friday and saturday evenings each week but as ionian they were it gave customers an opportunity to choose the night suited them best individually to do their shop ping but it meant that shop owners and clerks must be on the job both nights saturday night is always a big night in town but with the ten oclock closing hour in effect it simply means that shopping will have to occupy the first pnrtof the evening rather than be spread out until midnight and after it means that store owners and help enn leave before midnight and have given every customer service in the first part of the evening rather than at the time when being overcome by sleep hotter service yes the war has brought home many lessons and not the least important of them is a greater consid eration of some of the problems of the other fellow we hope when the war is over we will not forget these lessons and drift back v advertising in wartime people arc sometimes heard to ask why adver tising should be allowed in wartime they argue thixtit is a wasteful and useless practice that should be abolished or at least greatly curtailed- sensible answers to such people are provided in the retailers bulletin an official publication of the wartime prices and trade board the bulletin states simply that if the production of particular goods or services is permitted then it is permissible to sell them and it is pcrmissable to assist their sales by using advertising media within the few regulations sot forth by the government moreover the bulletin outlines- the following ways in which advertising may contribute to the stabiliza tion of business and the economical distribution of goods and services infbrmingcustomers or the effect of govern ment regulations upon purchasing giving current information regarding available goods to prevent panic buying or hoarding due to rumors or temporary shortages interpreting priority or simplified practice rul ings by giving reasons for rationing limitations of supply reduced deliveries or other curtailments of service guiding the buying public quickly to available perishable goods or other goods in plentiful supply the bulletin further makes clear that merchants may advertise comparative prices in order to move perishable outofseason stock op broken ranges of stock which are offered at special prices such ad vertising is helpful to organized commerce although it should not encourage unnecessary buying nor stimulate the desire to hoard concludes the buuetifr until peacetime conditions are restored adver- tising will find m new and different functions to perform urging customers to restrict their choice and to save rather than to choose and to spend ediix eating the public to more economical and fuller use of available commodities informing consumers of the facts behind the elimination of frills from new standardized and simplified products etc ottawa journal wartime soccer brings thrills in old britain catudlim glvo lite impmulottn of tyill crowd at tiame which went extend ed another year to include the continuation school too since both schools are located adjacent we tan see no reason why this cannot be carried out without any inconvenience and surely interest should not stop in the public school grades i we believe that most parents welcome the op- portumtv to visit the school once a vear that visit i mcajis much in encouragement to the children after ell if they were playing a game at the arena or tak- j irig part in a concert every parent would be on hurid j to witness the performance education week docjj accomplish much therefore if it is only the encour- hgement that pupils get fcom parents being inter- tsted in the childrens school work but this yearly visit to the school does more it- provides iin opportunity for parents to meet teachers anipit gives tatepuyers chance to see the building and conditions under which their children get their education which covers the impressionable years of childhood mc hope the event will never develop into the old christmas concert visits that detracted from ordin ary school work and sometimes developed com petitive spirit among grades that was not good for tfcfe school as a whole after all regular
