the acton fhee press thuitsday june 10th ims m gynnaa m tt t itna fliin um a f- c slvctsait w eeenwe sry to hht eku will frevacatiaat dagta just lew weeks until the long summer school va cation starts what a chance has been made in the years before the war young people were planning ta these pieholiday weeks where vacations would be spent what summer resort would be visited and how vacation expenses would be stretched to cover the most territory now with many ol these young people the pre- holiday planning is where a summer iob will be se- cured and how a week or so can give the summer vacation mostly however the job is uppermost rather than the vacation plans war is serious busi ness and it is regretted that its demands make it im perative that playtime even among the youth ol the land must be devoted to this demand for work it is pleasant however to realize that the period is only for a limited time perhaps before the vacation period of 1044 rolls around such strenuous and con stant effort will not be necessary and more time can be devoted to vacations in the meantime when victory is coming closer each day this year is the time for all canadians and people of all allied na tions to give their every effort tojinish the task vacations can wait but the war must be won v when the public aaacatnles we dontknow that the children of acton are any better or any worse than those of other communi ties but we do know that their conduct and noise- making at public gatherings shows tack of train ing and discipline that does not reflect well on the community as a whole at events where children are allowed to go unaccompanied by adults their noise has made some functions impossible to enjoy by adults attending we do not know where the fault lies or where the correction should start it might not be a bad plan for pirents schools and all those arranging public functions to get together to correct the matter if some improvement is not shown it may become necessary that parents accom pany the children and keep them with them at all public gatherings failing that the children who are not apt to behave might be kept at home in the in terests of the general good and so the story crew a few weeks ago we published an article in our letter to the editor column referring to cruelty to animals there was a casual reference to poison ing of fogs but nothing to suggest that any dogs had been poisoned in acton this year and incidentally we have not heard of a case this season during the week we received a letter from the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals in which it was stated that their attention had been wn to the fact that dog poisoning was taking place in and around acton the information had come from reading a copy of the acton free press we were pleased to learn that this society would co operate if there was an epidemic of dog poisoning but there isnt any epidemic the specific case in that letter as we recall it dealt with another phase of cruelty to animals the point is that readers oc casionally are the ones who misquote newspapers we have seen it occur on many occasions we are not saying that speakers are never misquoted newspapers but we do say that more often the mis- underetandink comes from the reader who after a hasty perusal forms an opinion that is not often borne ont by the printed article perhaps newspaper desk receives bo greater 4etuge of anaxcrial than aay other place but we do aecaa to get aware than our share articles on how to win the war quicker some that want aaore fronts as toag as they dont involve them and thcat other plana on what to do after the war with this very peaceful world well have all crowd about us there those who want reform but are not prepared to ay of those thiags they now hold to accomplish these changes no we dont read all these hri that coaae to our desk but we do scan many of thcaa this week we read one in which the writer was f carta of what the clcj will do if allowed to se cure wer twentyfive year or aaore ago we must confess we took a great interest in socialism and study of it we recall about that time of hearing eugene v debs the american socialist who spent soase time in iails because of his doc trines many of the things he then advocated as radical nacasurcs are now on our statute hooks and considered very good legislation but they didnt come there overnight they came when the people were ready to receive them and they have been much improved through the years from the original pattern the socialist party in the united states never came near getting into power and yet their vigorous campaigning for greater social security for the in has accomplished much good the ccf- will come into rightful power only when the other parties turn a stone deaf ear to the need for their social advancements it nor any other party caorbringon these changes before tho general populace is ready for their acceptance in the changeover of the future as in the past there b be an orderly rearrangement and elimination ot some of the things we do not want to lose but if these things we want to hold are out of step we will lose them in the common good whether we struggle or not we may write a series of articles on this subject even if we cant be alarmed by the chang es that are bound to come as we journey along lifes way then again it may never occur to us that we started them unless somo more literature to our desk brings it to our attention even the one cent mail may be a factor for good or evil v llanos arrow the acre one of the problems of our canadian civilization in the past 20 years has been the widening breach between country and city during the war years however urban young people of school age are going buck to the farms for summer work the primary object is of course increased agricul tural production but the results cannot be measur ed entirely in bushels and hundredweight for every elfort that the towit youth put into their summer work there is a corresponding personal reutru the good food fresh air regular physical work in daylight hours though tiring at first make for phys ical improvement summer muscular exertion com pensates winter mental effort though they may rot realize it their education is continuing with nature as the teacher the field the barn and the bush as classrooms they learn that ptants beast and man are bound by the fundamental laws of na ture if these laws are observed success follows if they are broken the inevitable penalty is failure the youth of the town and country are thrown together with a common purpose on the home terri tory of the latter rather than of the former the city youths after a week have sincere respect for country boys knowledge and sliill in handling imp lements and animals their endurance heartiness and perseverance are all born of a job that cannot be hurried the tempo is dictated by sun and sea son not by power and machines nature cannot be speeded up the youth of the country will marvel at the gaps in the city boys knowledge but at the same time they will take keen interest in another way of life and in experiences that have been out of their range as this generation grows up there will be a better understanding of two ways of life summer labor end its resultant friendships will go a long way to wards engendering closer contact between city and country v editorial notes the week at ottawa iiviumiu are tbttt mwr papufthftrm will bo ua subject ouawiderable defeat by critical of the adnalutrauiu- before tne hrmrtat lartiaaaealary aesslua ends
