qualities of initiative stamina physical cour age and horizonvision have built the nation whose achievements we honor on her 77th dominion day fin defiance of geography she has linked three coasts by rail and air in defiance of history she has kept faith on a 2300mile unfortified boundary for 128 years her population has trebled since 1 867 the year of confederation- agriculture industry mining have outstripped the bravest dreams of the fathers of confederation in a little less than four years of war she has established basic industries which will be of untold value in the postwar period today geared to the highest per capita war pro duction of any british dominion she stands in de fiance of dictators a dagger pointed at the heart of berlin by sea land and air a pioneer of democracy but if on an anniversary the past parades its gratifying achievements at the same time the future throws down its challenges and here too canada has been a pioneer the british commonwealth air training plan antiinflation legislation and pay-as- yougo financial policy place her in the vanguard the united states has studied her maritime economy and the other dominions her war production pro jects those who know see the wars beginmng of the end it is not too soon for canadians tb assess the problems of the future when the end comes there will be tremendous tasks ahead the drafting and execution of a postwar social order that will avail iself of canadas demonstrated capacity for patriotism sustained effort and spirited action her past accomplishments have provided experi ence and confidence the war has proved her un paralleled ability to expand the way lies open for canada the pioneer of the future 1875 with this issue the fkee press starts another sew volume since july 1st 1875 it has been serv- ssg this community and throughout the period there has bees a constant endeavor to keep pace and ser- stcc under all conditions with the growth of the town and ixkuxvct it serves during these sixtyeight years five eduvrs have served three of the editors in the fine four years of the newly founded journal j h hacking s w calbraitb and rev t albert moore from is70 until 1027 the late h p moore was editor and since 1027 the present editor has been in charge for sixtyfour of the sixtyeight years there fore two men have been guiding this journal to the men who preceded us and laid so well the foun dations for a good newspaper and commercial print ing plant we indeed give the highest tribute our aim while the task is in our hands will be to continue these traditions for service snd progress with the community and district perhaps we will be pardon ed if we say some evidence of upholding these tra ditions has fallen our lot in awards made the free press in dominionwide newspaper competitions during this period we would be remiss indeed if we let this anniversary occasion pass without ex pressing our appreciation to all those who have as sisted us in our aim to keep the free press repre sentative of the community it serves loyal cor respondents contributors of special columns adver tisers those for whom we do commercial printing and all friends have misjudged general conduct in piihlir wrongly once again we wonder if all improvement in conduct needs to be deferred to the post war period there seems so many things where individuals in every day life could bring about a better world in which to live and by which others could live in and enjoy life better if their conduct was improved inquiry in other towns shows a similar experience as in interesting information and some pride for canadas accomplishments as the item describes how canadas wool industry was converted without any confusion to m wartime basis here are some extracts from the article efficient and complete orguiiution of the wool cloth and blanket mills in cansrli for production to meet military requirements and essential civilian needs is one of the outstanding succrfisrri in the dom inions war effort it is noteworthy because the re sults were obtained through full and free coopera tion between this industry and the government prior to 1930 the woollen industry in cauda supplied only 54 per cent of the cloth requirements of the home market provided by eleven and a half million canadians by 1942 in the face of shortages of skilled labor and heavy labor turnover the indus try increased its yardage by over 100 per cent cloth was produced not only for the canadian fighting services but for the navy and army of great britain some cloth was sent to russia and in the early days of tho war some technical munitions cloths were ship ped to the united states the article gives details of how the wool industry was organized to meet the war situation and the figures of increased production are indeed records of efficiency in 1938 it required 100 persons em ployed to produce 100 yards of cloth iii 1042 there were 155 persons employed to 207 yards of cloth and this comparison did not idclude cloth produced for blankets the tota1 yardage now being produced in canada for military and civilian use is approximate ly equal to the total yardage used for civilian purpos es in prewar years including both imported cloth and domestic production the canadian mills have de monstrated that they could supply practically the en tire postwar canadian market for cloth so that after the war there should be no necessity for can ada to import other than a negligible amount of cloth v editorial kotos more blood donors are needed if acton is to meet the latest call for service in the war effort v the basically simple things are best whether its automobiles or diets or philosophy henry lord v there is demand enough in sight to keep every productive
