t l4l baiwwijtte at this time of yarye jet many renewal from subscribers out of town and we do enjoy the one that have a short note enclosed some times telling about the weather or conditions in their part of the world sometimes they tell us bow they enjoy the paper or hiat nelivery fa alow in the maila sometimes the notessrerit- ical and sometimes conf ratulalory nut what ever they are we do enjoy xcttinc thcm perhaps the reason i that every week we feel we are writing to you the subscribers giv ing the news of acton and districi we look on our work in that light each week whether our writings convey that tmpreaiion or not so when we get these notes with renewals to us its just like getting your answer to our letter writing of course when the renewal is enclosed we know that you want us to keep on writing the news for you next year and thats encouraging and helpful in our problem of meeting expen ses a lot of folks assist an editor in this weekly home town letter and we know you subscribers ppredarertirtrworic too so on their behalf we thank you for these notes at renewal time also editor half century until sometime after the occasion we were not awre that our neighbouring editor elgin a harris of the burlington gazette had reach ed the half century mark as editor snd publish er of that fires weekly at the south end of the county to be perfectly frank it was not until we read in our trade magazines of the occasion were we aware of oar slackness in extending congratulations on such an event the citizens of burlington were however appreciative of aji harris in their community and at a compv limentary dinner presented to him a ailverlray it immi difficult ltt u to raalua that elgin harris has been so long at the helm of the bur lington gazette we recall that our predecessor the late h p moore guided the acton free pre for fifty years but to meet mr harris at conventions or in other circles we did not as sociate him in this exclusive hslf century club but the years de roll along we have known the burlington editor for many of these years with him we can recall when all the towni of halton were much smaller and with him we have enjoyed seeing them progress mrhsrrit has done well his task for burlington and in the county he merits the community honor bestowed upon him and the many fine com ments of the press and trade on his years of ser vice and achievement belatedly we add ours and the hope that he will enjoy many more years in the community of which in this period he has really become a vital part recipe fee a happy new year take 2 fine fullgrown months sec that baa are thoroughly tree from old memories ol bitterness rancor hate and jealousy gleansc them completely from every clinging spite pkk off all apecks of pettiness and littleness in short see that these months sre freed from all the past havehemi fresh andclean as when they first came from the great storehouse of time cut these months into w or m equal parts this batch will keep for just one year bo not attempt to bake up the whole batch at one time 7omany people spoil thr entire lot ihiway but prepare one day at a time as ollows into each day put 2 parts of faith ii of patience 10 of courage nine of work som- people omit this ingredient and spoil the flavor of tht rest eight parrs of hope seven of fidel ity six of liberality five of kindness fourof rest t leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dont do it three parts of prayer two of meditation and one wellselected res olution then put t about a teaspoonful of rooj spirits a dash of fun a pinch of folly a ngger of laughter a sprinkling of playvand a heaping cupful of good humor cook thoroughly in a lerxcnt heat garnish with a few smiles and a sprig ot joy then serve with quietness unselfishness and chcerfjilncss and a happy year is a certainty enid day in magazine digest liuaineaa outlook for 1949 the new year can be good says the finan cial post after a close examination of the out look in various fields and securing opinions of many top ranking executives continuing the last weeks issue of the financial journal says an ottawa authority gives it as his considered view that canadas gross national product for neat year will be higher perhaps ici billions compared with an estimated i5j billions for 1048 it was sv2 billions in lojrs more valu able dollars in terms of 10 jo constant dollars that would mean about 102 billions for i04r an- toobiuioeforj04o another forecast from an impressive source is for a 2 per cent decline in total physical vol ume of production which with aome price de clines may give a 1040 gross national product ebout half a billion lower that most fundamental of all clues as to the year ahead the volume of new investment continues strong industrial building will he down but indications are that this wilt be more than offset by a rise in spendingby utilities provincial and municipal governments institut ions etc to keep the overall figure at or near the record billions of 1048 but if 1040 looks good everybody is going to have to work harder and better than in the vear now incising slackness incxecutivc im1 sales
