distance telephone calls telegrams and fables canadian women will be heartened at the news that the twenty live per cent tax on jewel lcry cosmetics and toilet preparations is re duced to ten per cent and the thirty ave per cent fix on luggage handbags and similar articles is also down ten per cent mr abbott aid that pens and pencils which have been taxed thirty ave per cent will henceforth be subject to a levy of only in par cant a fur ther compensating factor is that in the future these taxes will be paid on the manufacturers price instead of on the retail price as ha been the practice in the past two items which are not subject to tax reductions are liquor and tobacco mr abbotts thirdbudget will go down in history as the little mans budget bringing benefits to every family in canada tvwn so acton is about to step from village to town stttus the steps might have been taken ten years ago but evidently there was no point in making ota change as a mattter of local historical interest it might b recajled that it was in 1844 that the first pott4roa was ob tained for the hamlet and the name of acton adapted from 1844 to 1873 the centre remained part of the township of esquesing and in 1 87 j acton became an incorporated village and has remained as such until this year when proceed ings are now in progress to have acton take town status while the municipal statistics lists 48 towns with population under 2000 in ontario there are only nine villages with populations over 2000 and we believe fergus is this year consid ering joining the group of towns which will leave only seven wc are glad to see actons growth snd we commend this change weve lived in the village for miny of the 76 years since incorporation and we never could just bring ou selves to strong advocacy of a change to tow ststus rut with the present population well over 2600 it does opt seem wise to make longer delay we hope that with becoming a town we will not lose that community spirit of co operation that has madcactcn r bit different wc hope wc will retain that same spirit of working together that ha accomplished such things as the vcout home psrk improvement building a swimming pool an arena etc working and playing together in a village way we hopo thst becoming a town wont stop the neigh borlmcs and make folks unfriendly we hope the family wont become so big that it will have wide spaces of division we will be glad to see acton become a town but don t let s lose any of the things that hftvo made its village days so pleasant we hae what cities lack lets keep it no matter what the growth or static of acton may become uaury eatcr seal campaign kuth the easter season near at hand rotary clubs throughout onteho including acton are making plana for their annual easier seal campaign on behalf of crippled children at the present time there are tbousanda of crippled children in ontario who need the help of the ontario society for crippled children tb sponsors of the seal campaign this campaign was inaugurated in 1047 under joint auspices of the ontario saciaty for crippled children and rotary and other service clubs which are devoting their resources to this very commendable work following along the lines of the chiatmas seal campaign for t b prevention work the easter seal drive brought very encouraging results in the way of pro viding new finances for crippled childrens work last year about two hundred service clubs reported over 3 000 cases to the society having to do with polio tuberculous rtckem congenial and accidental crippling disposition of these cases resulted in hospitalization treat ment appliances supplied or other aid the acton rotary club is again joining in the appeal and is asking the support of all citizens of the community letters have been sent out to local residents containing seats ac com pan led by a return addressed envelope for the contribution it should be stated receipts for all donations to this fund will be sub mitted for income tax purposes the society for crippled children has expanded its work to an extent that requires a public appeal for financial aid and it has adopted the easter seal campaign for the purpose of enabling all cit izens to make a contribution to the project merry wood on the rideau camp opened last year is sponsored by the crippled children s society there is ho more humanitarian under taking than that of helping to restore crippied boys and girls to soundness in health and limb undoutcdly the faster seal drive should meet ith a very generous response in acton and community buy i aster seals and help crippled child rcn kditorial notes icjorztfoygstfoligziocj recollections ol aclon ipifsyc5ff back in 1899 takra frn tk laur l tit vtm fma af tkurwlay thrrb lauk last weekn beat newa in spite of the fact that the budget news is now over a week old its still being talked about by most canadians because it was the best news receied in alleviation of taxes since 1040 it reduced the canadian tax bill by nearly 370 000 000 and rcmocd 7s0 000 canadians from the imome tax rolls here arc some illustrations of the income tax deductions brought about by the liberal gonernmcnt s budget a single person earning 2 s00 will have hii tax cut from 320 to 2s a single person earn ing 5000 will hait his takes reduced from 835 to 700 if he earns 10 000 the cut will be from 2 2s3 to 1 ooo taxes payable by a married person without de at the s three levels will come down from 170 to 75 from 670 to 510 and from 1 000 to 1 860 in the case of married persons with two matter what the growth or status of acton comcgroups from 130 to 30 from 830 to 153 and from 1 930 to 1 582 mr abbott pointed out that canadians who have been paving 1049 taxes by the payroll deduction method and who have been eliminat ed from the tax rolls as a consequence of the new budget will receive refunds in dollar terms taxpayers in all brackets will be bepe fitted but the effect is most marked in the lower income groups of special interest to teenagers was the statement of the finance minister that special taxes- on soft drjnks icandy and chewing gum have been removed this was interpreted as weaning that there is a fair chance that these products may soon sell for five cents again after inst wednesday night wc hnd a lot more supporters in our contention that no 25 highway from acton to milton was the worst in ontario
